When did a CS degree become useless? It was definitely before ai, I remember people in the 2010's going through recruitment hell trying to get a job with it
>>83851742When did a CS degree become useless? It was when the mainstream media kept shilling it really hard and claiming there were massive shortages of programmers. Big top signal. I graduated in 2016 and have never had a job in my field. It's like there's a big sign on my forehead that says "do not hire".
graduated in 2014 with CS degree. Basically the shortage people often described is a shortage of experienced engineers. The market has been flooded by new grads and junior engineers which not many companies want to risk hiring and train. They often rather just outsource the work to cheaper countries. When I graduated, I basically struggled getting a job because no one was willing to hire a fresh grad. Managed to get my first job thanks to a friend recommending me at his company. During that time I helped do interviews and people were often so bad and felt like they didn't really know anything.
>>83852148>the mainstream media kept shilling it really hard Still I never wanted to become a codefag. I hated programming ever since I did C++ in high school. I could do it if I wanted to but...I didn't want to. Went and did electrical engineering instead and glad I did. Also, I know people who went and did CS. Some of them are still making good money but they are depressed, aged like shit and they're pretty much all going through burnout and having headaches every day. And they're starting to be replaced with pajeets using Claude AI who do the same work for 1/5th of their pay. Honestly, fuck them. They had so many years of earning doctor-like wages, twice what most actual engineers make. And for what? Coding fucking e-commerce and boner pill websites the world can do without.
>>83851742>Graduated with a masters in CS in 2021>Got a FAANG job out of school because during the pandemic they were hiring like crazy.>Worked at a top big tech firm for 3 years, didn't hate the work but hated the corporate environment and having to play a character all day so I don't get fired, and feeling like my work had no real purpose.>Was working remotely but in 2024 they demanded I return to office.>Said no, they fired me (got a fat severance package thoughoverbeit)>Applied to tech jobs in 2025, interviewed for a few companies and even got to final round interviews but never got an offer even with some impressive projects and a promo on my resume.>Looking at the descriptions of these jobs it was all shit I didn't want to do anymore. I didn't want to work on systems that don't really do anything and get replaced in one year anyways.>Was tired of memorizing leadership principles and grinding leetcodes>Meanwhile, my dad's small manufacturing company had an opening, decided to work there>Been there for a year and I'm not paid as well but the work is comfy and I help make products that save peoples' lives (medical device firm)>Still program but just personal projects like indie gamesSo glad I got out of tech when I did, having used AI to help make games I can see the writing on the wall.
>>83851742A CS degree is only useless if YOU are retarded; if YOU are a shit programmer, don't blame computer
>>83852519It sucks to be versatile and capable of learning many things to a certain level of proficiency but not 99th percentile at any one thing. Feels very cucked having an even profile of intelligences and no learning disabilities but also no exceptional abilities.
>>83851742Every decade there is a boom or a rush. They claim going to college is the fast way to go from broke to gainfully employed. Then it is computer science and now it is trades. Just become a carpenter bro, you'll be making 150k a year cutting wood because 0.2 percent of carpenters own huge successful businesses so that means you will too.

>>83851742>When did a CS degree become uselessWhen people thought """bootcamps""" and associate degrees could give them a high paying job and by that attracted tards
I have been working at FAANG for nearly seven years now. I do not have a CS degree. I wish I worked on real things that matter. But every other job I have had felt just as pointless and corporate but for less money. Such is life.
