Whenever an online person says they've got terminal cancer and less than a year to live, why is the kneejerk reaction for people is to give them hope that it will magically get better?

Can't you say something that is both nice and realistic?

I would say that I'm sorry, and I'd just try to talk to them like normal. Ask them where they're from, their childhood, their parents. Maybe try to evoke some warm memories.
