Thinking of writing a story that someday when I get good enough at art I'll make into a manga. Wanted to a second opinion on the idea, since I don't have anyone else to ask.>Its a fantasy world with magic, races and such. Technology level is gunpowder & steam powered vehicles.>There's this isolated city that is protected by a barrier, it is unknown who made it and when.>Outside this barrier are extremely dangerous monsters, since these lands are littered with a ton of mana, increasing the closer you get to the barrier>There are monsters around the world, none are as powerful as these. There are hot spots, but nothing compares to here.>The isolated land has mana crystals that self-regenerate and store an immense amount of mana, unlike anywhere else. This city mine's, uses & sells these crystals>Since outside the barriers are extremely dangerous monsters, contact & trade are almost impossible. Yet these crystals are incredible useful, abound in the city and don't exist beyond it.>Outside world really wants these crystals, they have become insanely expensive but insanely useful, they are a tool of war and industry.>Nations set up armed convoys to import these, the convoys are almost always wiped out due to the monsters. There are some private merchants that hire mercenaries and try to make it, but again almost always wiped out.The story is about a young man who joins one of these convoys run by his nation, in hopes of getting riches. He's given a bit of training, and sent out as he's most likely going to die. He'll struggle, a lot of his friends will die, but he will end up surviving. He'll end up taking all his experience of being one of the few convoys to survive, and improving the system, he'll lead a convoy as a veteran.

bit silly, develop more your world. In an isolated place like that what you would expect is that people ate up the resources and since they can't get more due to the monsters they go extinct, like people have done in remote islands.

Hard sell. Without focusing on the rest of the convoy crew, difficult relationship characterizing. But i don't like depressing stories where known characters die.
