What was cool about the 2000s was that being alternative, whether it was pop-punk or emo or mallgoth or numetal or whatever, was mainstream. You were simultaneously an outcast, while belonging to a huge mainstream subculture.

So you had all these would-be incels and loners rubbing elbows with people who would normally be full blown normies.

There was also all the regular Third Places still around like arcades and video rental stores and shopping malls and 10 times more bars and clubs and pool halls and hangouts for teens and young adults.

and if on the other hand you said "fuck all that" and you just wanted to stay on your computer all night long then you could exactly that. The golden age of piracy, peak World of Warcraft, comfy messaging platforms like ICQ and IRC and MSN messenger and any and all Chat Rooms back when that was still a thing, forums and message boards were huge as well like GameFAQs or SomethingAwful or even this then-new image board called 4chan.

What's also crazy is that I did both. Some weekends I would spend literally the entire night arguing with another autistic retard on the Newgrounds forums while playing Flash games and getting lost on Japanese websites looking for hentai, and the next weekend I would go out with some friends to an arcade/pool hall and some dingy psychobilly or goth metal show with 10 people in the crowd.
