I actually like Metallica, but it is not my favorite "metal" band. I'm only adding quotations because I'm not really sure what metal is, metaltards usually correct me if I say what is and is not a metal band, but my favorite "metal" band was Slayer. I was like 11 when I purchased their CD album and listened to Slayer a lot growing up and playing games.

I don't like thrash metal. The closest thing is I'll listen to is early death metal, which has a noticeable thrash influence. I prefer speed and technicality.

They were older, they couldn't be dads in their 30s writing edgy lyrics anymore, they were slowing down by the black album and they wanted to experiment with southern rock, hard rock, bluesy rock. The songs just weren't there, they'd have been better off just calling it quits and doing shows instead of trying to make borderline southern rock post grunge. Then St Anger, then trying to give fans what they want by giving them a watered down recycled version of their old material.
