If you're gonna mandate age verification, fine, but why not use a device-based method to do it? Simply mandate legally that companies like Apple, Google and Microsoft must implement a stage at some point during the setup process that asks the user if they are an adult setting the device up for themselves, or their child, or if they are a minor setting the device up themselves and if it's the latter two the device behaves a little differently. Doesn't show porn, doesn't allow more than a few hours of usage per day, doesn't allow you to message people your parents haven't added to your contacts for you, gives your parents constant insight into what you're doing in your devices, etc. It's basically just legally mandated (or at least incentivized) parental controls. Same effect without collecting everyone's most sensitive information and storing it in an unsecured database in who the fuck knows where, Azerbaijan. Why not just do that instead?
>9 year old takes phone from dad's nightstand>btfos your entire argument
>>84003962>why not use a device-based method to do it? Privacy, that's why. I don't want my device knowing my age and sharing it with every app that's on it. Just fucking punish parents who give their kids smartphones with internet access. Make it a felony. Don't fuck up privacy for everyone on the internet just because most parents today are fucking idiots who should've never had kids in the first place because they have no interest in actual parenting.
Faggot stop giving them ideas they're already trying to propose OS-level age verification in Colorado
>>84003975>pedo gets a second phone and sets it up in kids mode>also btfos OPs retarded argument
How about we just stop pretending it matters at all? We all know it's just pearl clutching bullshit.
>>84004005what is he going to do? OP named no privileges of kid mode, not messaging other kids no nothing
>>84003962A digital id issuing company doesn't have to store your info in a database. They can just generate a stateless token with your date of birth signed.
spoiler: governments have never cared about kids, they're just a super convenient excuse to push mass surveillance bullshit down your throat
I've said this on /v/ and I am always willing to say it againRepublicans carry a large amount of blame for Discord's new age verification policies, and most of the laws that led to it. Republican politicians have been spearheading laws that shift the blame of early porn exposure from parents who take no effort to monitor their kids internet usage to businesses and require adult websites to use ID verification to ensure no minors are looking at porn. All but one of the states that require ID for accessing adult websites are red, and over half of all US citizens are living in these statesI'll admit that it's extremely difficult to be a kid on the modern internet and not come across porn. You saw all those shitty porn memes get popular around the pandemic like the Ankha animation. Also yeah, most porn websites are owned by kikes who absolutely know a large percentage of their users are not adults and are a net negative on society, but the laws republicans are writing still set the precedent that simply asking "are you 18+?" is legally not enough for age verification. With the expanding list of red states adopting these laws, and with countries like the UK already under this framework, Discord is just biting the bullet and falling in line to prevent themselves from being sued. We have prominent figures in the political party of supposedly personal rights advocating for our freedom to be taken away and no one in power stood up to them. Not to say that leftists aren't also interested in making the internet a panopticon where nothing problematic can be made, but republicans have no interest in keeping the internet a place where people can say what's on their mind without worrying about being doxxedI'm not trying to make this a left vs right thing since the left has shown they are fine with our rights being taken away. I just want to make it clear that you are not avoiding the online panopticon by voting for the lesser evil
>>84004029>live in red state that require id for porn>vpn>????>profitI only use my id for droogs
>device doesn't allowAnd how will the device know?Is it viewing your material? Will it mandate some setting that every single website must comply with or be wiped from the internet?>it won't collect everyone's information!Your information is already being collected. ISP bills have a name and address attached to it, ISP logs your traffic, facebook and twitter definitely log your traffic. I hate it, but you need to give up such notions. The idea is that per our current legal system, there is still the vaguest notion of doubt or privacy. "No, this comment wasn't made by me even if that's my IP. Maybe someone hacked me idk. Maybe it was my sister. You can't prove it was me."This is why they have to collect your devices to search them if you get dinged for CP instead of them just arresting the entire house, as well as why they hate encryption. But a device locked to a personal ID? ggEnjoy being locked up UK style for criticizing a politician or policy.
>>84004048I like how you think the device isn't also watching you already lol
>>84003975>dad's phone is locked>shithead kid doesn't know the passcode and can't unlock the phone unless dad opens his eyes and looks directly at itthis is better than government surveillance and better than nothing at all methinks. >>84004005...what would that do? congrats the pedo now owns a phone that won't let him send and receive messages.
>>84004028They can also store it, say they're not storing it, and make a shitload of money selling it to data brokers or government agencies. And even if they don't store your info, sending your ID to random porn sites across the web is OBVIOUSLY terrible opsec. What's to stop a man-in-the-middle attack? What about phishing scams?
>>84003975>takes dad's phone and commits a mass viewing of 30 pornographic pictures
>>84004048>And how will the device know?Is it viewing your material? This isn't difficult to pull off. Even Windows Vista had really effective parental controls that could automatically block porn sites, and this was all the way back in 2008. I didn't even see porn for the first time in my life until age 19. >Your information is already being collected. ISP bills have a name and address attached to it, ISP logs your traffic, facebook and twitter definitely log your traffic. I hate it, but you need to give up such notions. This is not a reason to willingly implement even more surveillance on top of that.>The idea is that per our current legal system, there is still the vaguest notion of doubt or privacy. "No, this comment wasn't made by me even if that's my IP. Maybe someone hacked me idk. Maybe it was my sister. You can't prove it was me.">This is why they have to collect your devices to search them if you get dinged for CP instead of them just arresting the entire house, as well as why they hate encryption.>But a device locked to a personal ID? gg>Enjoy being locked up UK style for criticizing a politician or policy.I mean, yeah. That's why I hate these policies.
I think the best solution is to make porn illegal entirely. It's bad for you, it doesn't help anyone, it facilitates rape and abuse, it gives you ED age can lead to Alzheimer's. You don't need it, nobody does, especially kids. Plus there's no privacy violation if porn is unilaterally illegal for everyone.
>>84004082Not actively unless you bought tampered device or using windows 11 or something. But the intent of the post was, the device itself (not the operators of the network) only know if porn is on screen if it's matching a site or has some image recognition / AI thing constantly analyzing the screen.Which is why the windows 11 thing of "sending screenshots of screen periodically" is pretty terrifying in concept.>>84004193Said parental controls only work on specific sites. It's why Texas has the porn ban but it in practice only blocks pornhub and xhamster and not the thousands of other porn sites.
>>84004210>it facilitates rape and abuseHow does this hold against drawn or 3D animated porn?>can lead to Alzheimer'sI don't want to sound like a bitch but source?
>>84004210>>84004480Since we're just saying shit I'd also like to throw in I've heard that places where pornography is illegal end up having more rapes and sexual assaultsN.eitherof.T.As
>>84004480>How does this hold against drawn or 3D animated porn?Same thing. It normalizes sexual violence. If you watch porn, cartoon or otherwise, you're probably going to rape.>sourceIt's one of the side effects of dopamine exhaustion.
