>loser doing doordash because I dont want a real job>car got hit on the passenger side doors a couple weeks ago>damage isn't that bad but car is only worth like 2k>his insurance company wants to pay for it>is prolly just gonna total it to minimize payout>totalling it gives it a salvage title>can buy it back at that point and apply for a rebuilt title>would take weeks as i have to wait for the new salvage title to come in the mail>need the car for my minimal effort doordash jobam I supposed to just skip all of that and pay out of pocket now? if I do, it'll cost $400-500 to fix it myself. alternatively, if I let it get totalled, I net maybe $1000 from settlement after repairs and buyback cost. I would make that in just two weeks though? appointment is tomorrow btw. what am i supposed to do?>inb4 go to /o/ (this is a what do post, not a car post)
If the car was still derivable you shouldn't have even reported it. See plenty of cars driving around with body damage.
>>84005115Why even bother fixing it? It's not like you're ever going to have passengers.
>>84005136thanks, anon....>>84005131the guy said we should and I wasn't about to avoid it as if I were some negroid driving a stolen car. plus he said something about my headlights not being on so he wanted to talk to involve insurance anyway believing it mightve not been his fault
Bodyshop/paintwork might not be as much as you think. It might not be totaled. What make/model/year is it?
>>84005198it's an '11 mitsubishi lancer base. at least one door needs to be replaced because the handle is displaced but the other can maybe be fixed with body filler. I just feel like it would cost a lot because body and paintwork requires paying labor for multiple trained guys, as well as some extra money to pay for rent and profit. plus, Im finding out repairs only need to exceed like 70% of the previous value of the car, so anything past like $1400 and it's done for
>>84005259that sucks man, you own it outright right, and don't have a loan or anything on it?
>>84005300yes I own it outright
>>84005348a shop might be able to get a door from a salvage yard for cheap and put it on, probably won't match paint or whatever but a car that old and cheap it doesn't matter. Or look into seeing if there's any body work.mechanic training schools around, sometimes they do cheap work on shit cars to give the trainees practice. It does sound like the insurance will total it though.
>>84005374ya I'm prolly looking at just skipping the damage assessment. it kinda sucks I was hoping to one day fix the other issues and have a car that's presentable but it is a beater car at the end of the day. and if i still want to do that the repairs are still only like a week's pay
why would you buy a totaled car, they give you money for a new one, and should even give you a rental in the meantime
>>84005541they only give you what the car is worth, which in his case is like sub 2k. That's not even enough for another beater unless he gets a really old shit box and even those are hard to find now since cash for clunkers led a lot of them being scrapped. With no steady job besides doordash he couldn't even get a loan except at a scummy buy here pay here lot which is nothing but a scam preying on the poor and financially illiterate.
OP if your car gets totaled depending on where you are located in the world try looking at pre 2010s Toyota Yarises as a cheap replacement. They are dirt cheap and can take a serious beating and keep on running even without basic maintenance done to them. They are a little shitbox car and are not anything fancy but they will get you where you need to go reliably if you just need a set of wheels to get the job done.
>>84005115OP I actually don't think they'll total it out. I would wait until you find out for sure. Also, don't forget that you can ask their insurance for a check instead of their insurance paying the body shop directly. Then you can simply pocket the check lol
