so uhh, you guys DO observe japanese art, right? porn and short anime series dont count
I read No Longer Human once. That's got to count for something.
>>84006287wow, what an asshole
>>84006276I'm too old to care about some island on the other side of the world anymore. My circle of concern has tightened.
>>84006276>porn and short anime series dont countyou dont decide what does count and what does not
No.What are some essential japanese pieces of art I should be observing?
>>84007124for me, i have lived with soul calibur being the most important thing in my life for years
>>84007124Boku no pico and Shoujo Ramune
I read Vita Sexualis, but im somewhat cured of my Nipophilia. Still jerks off to hentai and see Dragon Ball clips but outside that, i am not even 20% interested in japanese stuff as i did in 2012.
>>84007124depends, what do interests you about art in general? or do you want meme pieces like the wave? ukiyo-e is pretty either way.
>>84007129i own multiple copies of soul calibur games, so I must be on the right track>>84007224I know about the first one as a meme, and googling the second looks like pedo shit>>84007253ukiyo-e does feel like a meme, but is this the best japan has to offer? I understand the crude aesthetic comes from another time, but I prefer something more ornamental
>>84007124watch bokusatsu tenshi dokuro-chan, is peak cinema
A swarthy foreign barbarian and a local porcelain beauty? But what does it mean?
I like Japanese art about as much as I like French, but it really depends on the movement, time period, and medium. Lately I've been into learning about butoh and noh, and need to brush up on my knowledge about the Takarazuka Revue. I should really care more about kabuki but aside from the kumadori and the general onnagata practice it just isn't that interesting when compared to xiqu. Also been reminiscing about the past and hyperfocused on tea ceremonies for some reason - back in the fall I went to a Japanese festival and got a collection of (supposedly) small batch teas and tisanes from a vendor after looking through some decorative scrolls, fans, and parasols. Was planning on looking up how to actually do a proper tea ceremony since I still just microwave mugs and let the bags steep for literal hours which has always driven far more anal retentive friends crazy.I used to be really into different forms of Japanese alternative fashion like the mori kei, dolly kei, cult party kei, gyaru, larme kei (favorite along with dolly and dark mori), decora, and some forms of lolita but never wore any of it, and loved reading about maiko, geisha, and oiran especially when contrasting their contemporary practices with those of the Edo period in Yoshiwara. Got really into all the different historical versions of kimono and the construction of outfits for it complete with kanzashi and obidome and particularly loved the junihitoe and uchikake, which naturally led to looking into hanfu, ao dai, qipao, hanbok, and xout lao. Feeling fond of Tokyo lately so I've been going to various Japanese restaurants and trying new things, like futomaki with burdock root, oshinko, and gobo, or natto hosomaki. Both turned out great as did katsuobushi and shichimi togarashi, plus the cuttlefish balls and flying fish roe I had with tom yum hot pot at a Korean BBQ place (don't tell East Asia Westerners can't tell them apart), a break from ika and wakame. Chirashizushi is next!
>>84007399...? what part of suzuki harunobu, utamaro, or koryusai is "crude aesthetic" and not "ornamental"? ornamental is the entire point of ukiyo-e. this is the origin of iwato kagura dance amaterasu triptych by kunisada.>is this the best japan has to offer?uh, no? google is your friend. >https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_artthe ivory carving entitled "basket of flowers" on this page is incredibly intricate and pretty. modern and traditional japanese art are very different. i'm sure you can find something you like, somewhere.
>>84007399"looks like pedo shit" applies to most of the recommendations you're going to get about anime, especially if the post starts with boku no pico. that being said i do really like old shoujo art with its high romanticism and extreme intricate detail, especially macoto takahashi, junichi nakahara, hideko mizuno, miyako maki, ai yazawa, kyoko okazaki, moyoco anno, and to a lesser extent naoko takeuchi though i'm mixing josei mangaka in there. mamoru oshii, yoshitaka amano, eiichi yamamoto, yasuomi umetsu, koji morimoto, hiroyuki kitakubo, hiroyuki kitazume, masaaki yuasa, sunao katabuchi, katsuhiro otomo, and satoshi kon are all classic standouts in general.i assume you're aware of yoshitomo nara, aya takano, takashi murakami, tomoko nagai, chiho aoshima, and ayako rokkaku at the very least for contemporary artists? they're quite prolific on the internet. and yayoi kusama for installation, of course.
>>84007644>i assume you're aware ofnoI have no reference for important japanese art
>>84007444this man shungas>>84007399look up the difference between yoga and nihonga in japanese art btw. akita ranga predates yoga and shin-hanga was a taisho and showa revival of edo and meiji era ukiyo-e are more modernist though if the flatness of japanese art bothers you there's always uki-e and beni-e. bijin-ga will have all your beautiful women (or shunga lol) while yurei-zu will have the interesting and frankly a bit ethereal depictions of yokai/yurei/obake/shiryo. personally i think the parodies and visual puns of mitate-e are interesting (and the satires of fushiga which used a lot of text) as are nagasaki-e which, being centered in nagasaki which was a port that had the dutch and chinese running through it, has a lot of interesting depictions of wealthy dutch men with javanese boy servants and, apparently, ostriches.
>>84007657i don't know why you bothered saying this. look them up or don't, i don't really care. they're visually interesting but i can't force you to do anything and wouldn't want to even if i could. anyway yokohama-e has even more interesting depictions than nagasaki-e and was specifically japan going "oooh look how weird and exotic these foreigners look, what the fuck lmao?" over and over once foreigners were allowed in (and heavily sequestered away). it's hilarious to think of little japanese children pointing at these and asking why their noses are so big and strange just as i'm sure western children would ask why the japanese had such squinty eyes and all had the same hair color. kids say the darndest things! apparently this is what the extremely exotic land of washington dc looked like.
>>84007724and this is an exotic tribeswoman mounting her loyal steed from the distant land called "france"!
