Past that, they should have exclusive control of only the actual thing they made. As an example, you write a book. The book, the characters, etc. are all exclusively yours for 5 years. No one can make a derivative during that time period. After the 5 years are up, anyone can produce unofficial sequels, use your characters, etc. without asking you or paying you for the rights. The book itself remains yours for your lifetime however. My main gripe is that IP law produces broad monopolies that are bad for the consumer while artificially driving quality and supply down. The person I was arguing with said that IP law is fine as is and the reforms I want would discourage authors, etc. from producing new works.
