You do need to protect yourself, but you also need to let your partner know how you are. At some point you need to think about whether you trust him or not and how much you trust him if you do. Everyone has potential to hurt you, but not everyone is going to. Try to find some ways to protect yourself. You might want to make friends instead of having him be your entire support network. The more isolated you are, the harder it is to detach from someone. If he started abusing you today, would you be able to leave?
