Like the other anon says, emps are overrated. It would take a ton of energy (like a nuke) to emp a city. But that would only be temporary. It would have no more effect than a temporary blackout with electronic devices having to be restarted.

An emp is especially bad at destroying the power grid. At best, you cause a widespread blackout requiring a black start, similar to what happened in Spain last year. You would knock out the power for a couple days at most.
And with our technology, this would require detonating a nuke over every city. You would be better off just bombing the power plants.

We already have that capacity by detonating a nuke in space; America even did just that in the 60s, I think it was called operation fishbowl or starfish, and it fried a couple of satellites and interrupted some radio broadcasting over Hawaii. Also as other anons said that's the least of our worries for such a scenario; space is the ultimate high ground and we can maybe hit something in medium earth orbit with an ICBM if the aliens are stupid and took no evasive maneuvers at all against a launch. If an alien spacecraft wanted to fight, they can just sit in high Earth orbit and drop their version of a rod from god or asteroids on the planet with utter impunity for as long as they want to.

That's overkill, and if a civilization is capable of such feat, they could probably achieve much the same effect with an asteroid accelerated to a significant fraction of the speed of light and still save energy compared to moving the borderline planet sized moon; would be a hell of a flex though to send to moon into the earth
