I think you are confused about the purpose of meditation. But having done both, with the same goals, I find prayer to be more direct. It is easier to imagine a figure who is a force of absolute virtue guiding and advising you than it is to imagine yourself being the virtuous one. This, I think, is why there is the difference between God and Jesus in christianity. The father and the son.
