Across the board in so many areas it feels like everything from a technical standpoint has gotten worse. I dont mean usual stuff like raised prices or loot box shit in video games Im talking like audio or visual quality in movies, music, etc. web design, maintenance of infrastructure both irl and digital, food, both what you buy at the store and restaurant. Teachers are less competent same with any worker anywhere. Often times even getting help at a business or service requires you to do often more than half the fucking work and figuring it out. Is it because we have all gotten dumber or more bitter and apathetic. Its obviously likely both but yeah everything sucks ass and is gay now

Before except some stated obligation like taxes, work on fevdal fields etc. (even conscription started spreading only at end of 18th century) most people used to be more or less isolated from state and only part of local society. With mass state their obligations increased (compulsory military service, compulsive schooling etc.), state centralized and those people were forced to actively participate. And in time they also wanted some rights/privileges, not only obligations.
