I have hundred hour saves in VS and I always stop at iron, steel isn't really worth the pursuit in single player.

It is pretty difficult but that's what makes it rewarding. You want to have your cake and eat it too. If you do decide to play don't be afraid to install a mod that turns all the spooky paranormal shit off, it wasn't there originally and got kind of shoe-horned on later in development. I refuse to play with it.

No, it's intended to be a singleplayer experience. It's a lot more fun with friends, but really a completely different experience.

You don't need the real version to play with friends, I've been pirating VS for years. It's a little slow to get the newer version and it'll probably brick a lot of your mods a-la Skyrim style but that's something to worry about in the future.
