But in general, learn how to get people talking, then observe and really focus on what they are saying. If you can make smart observations and show people you really understand them, that leaves a big impression.
As for starting conversations, you can just inquire about something. Since you are new at your work place, there should be plenty of things you don't know about yet.
You can also give compliments and then ask them to show you how they did that.
