It's kind of strange to ask why educated people tend to adopt a political-economic philosophy that is in opposition to the dominant political-economic philosophy that consists entirely of a reification of profit so complete that the majority of individuals are brainwashed into believing that this system is a good thing for them. The idea that capitalism provides some great excess of freedom as opposed to socialism is at least a half of a lie. Capitalism in its purest instantiation guarantees only negative freedoms (that is, freedom from limiting factors), while extremely disproportionately skewing positive freedoms (that is, enabling freedoms, such as the positive freedom to take a sabbatical without pay and vacation) towards the upper class

And, even worse, in its modern instantiation (which I opine is in some which way where all forms of capitalism end up), you aren't even given the guarantee of positive freedom, unless you are ultra-wealthy or are yourself a giant corporation. Once you are low enough on the food chain, the regulations start to limit and destroy you. Meanwhile, if you are a mega corporation and are in trouble of going under (2008, COVID, yada-yada) you are given very favorable loans in the form of corporate bailouts, while all of your smaller competition is forced to dissolve without the mercy of such bailouts

The great idea of individualism under this system turns out to be a lie in the modern day as well, now that tech giants are in the control of massive hyperreal digital ecosystems, simulacra that we are constantly plugged into and transmogrify our aggregate and individual behavior towards the end of those who control these technologies (which, again, is the financial elite and owning class)

Not to mention the foundational lie of capitalism that 'ownership' entitles one to the labor surplus of another
