Buying a car is a genuinely extremely frustrating experience because obviously dealers just want to fuck you over, but everyone else gives contradicting advice or advice that is not possible in your situation.I need a car but no one is helping me buy one, so I have to make the decision myself and risk getting jewd by a dealer.

Buy one from someone in their garage if you can, a nice well kept suburban type
>>84299590Deny all warranties, refuse to pay for any addons, ask for an out the door price, for only $4000 say youll finance with them even though you can pay it in full(they get kickbacks from their bank financiers, even if you cant pay it in full they lie to you feel free to lie back), refinance for a lower rate and also dont let them rush you literally sit there and read all contracts start to finish. Stealerships arent that bad, at least not as bad as people say, they will negotiate and, at least for new cars, are willing to take a loss if youre local because they make more money in their shop and with finance deals than the sale of a car. Above all else be confident and never back down, who gives a fuck theyre not entitled to your money if you havent signed anything
that's bad price for 300k milesshop on craigslist or marketplace for a japanese car under 200k miles for under 5kgo on youtube and search "car problem sounds" and memorize what rod knock, lifter tick, and differential grinding sounds likeif the lifter tick goes away after about a minute of warming up, it's fine, a lot of japanese cars get lifter tick on start up then are fine after all the metal is hotif the lifter tick stays, it's badif a car is jerky when speeding up or slowing down the transmission is fucked
Buy a new car. Buy the extended warranty. Drive the hell out of it until the warranty expires, so you can be sure it will last. This is the only way. There is literally no consequence to being in debt these days.
>>84299590Look for private listings in nice areas. There's a higher chance that they've been taken care of. Google issues with every car you are interested in to get an idea of what you might be in for. You can always ask /o/ about car models.

>>84299590for used shit buy private party or from a small indie dealership that specializes in specific brands. usually those dealerships are damn near hidden so you have to find out about them from word of mouthalways get a PPI donealways negotiate on out the door price. if they start playing four square shit with you, tell them to shove itif you don't know someone irl who can help you out maybe work on that, learning how to navigate making large purchases and dealing with sales pressure and shit is an important skill. probs not taught by parents much anymore but idk...anyway having a buddy go with you when it's purchase time can be a big help>>84299648good advice
>>84299783It's not worth paying the premium for Toyota everyone thinks they are special magical cars
Shitboxes are sold for over $3K so yeah its grim. The car that I "own" is a 2013 Honda Civic that a cousin who moved to the US for a new job gave to my dad. My dad let me put the car under my name so the title and the insurance is mine, but my dad drives it everyday while I just use it to drive him around for appointments (if he can't drive) or when he goes away on vacation.I'm praying that the car doesn't explode by the time I get to actually own the car and drive it everyday. It might be like 2-3 years in the future but the car right now has just under 250,000 Kilometers and is decently maintained. But if I get screwed and the car dies as soon I get to fully own it, I hope I'll be rich so I can afford these car prices
>>84299721Can I get approved for anything if my credit is horrible? Because I was going to do Ch 7 bankruptcy anyway.
>>84299648I don't agree about the warranty thing. A good warranty will save your ass
>>84299861You can get approved for anything if you try hard enough. It either requires:>taking on slavery contracts where you eventually pay $20K more than the value of the car due to interest>putting a certain amount of money downI've talked to a few car salesmen and they will approve people with 500-ish credit on a $25K car if they put $2K-ish down payment
I want a pickup but it is overwhelming. Anything made after 2012 is not worth considering because too much computer, camera, sensor, and useless bullshit making it even more annoying to drive. My car is 18 years old and holding up pretty good. I'll probably keep it until I die, but no clue what to do about a truck. I guess wait until luck allows me to meet a carfag I can trust and he'll hook me up with a trustworthy deal on something that fits my criteria. It's a shame you can't just buy new parts for a twenty year old vehicle and put together from scratch. You can do that with a computer so why not vehicles? The whole industry feels like a scam. Cash for clunkers destroyed the used car industry in America, epa regulations and safety features just makes cars bigger, more expensive, and less reliable. Pure regulatory capture ensuring the only one to benefit is the monopolists and cronies in political offices getting kickbacks. The drivers are getting raped here.
>>84299590i cant give a ton of advice because i have only purchased one car from a dealership. i brought my well adjusted family member with me to help negotiate. i told the dealer the kind of car i was looking for and what my monthly payment budget was. they thoroughly showed me 2 cars over budget and i declined them and was ready to leave and he said wait we have this one we just got in and havent fully detailed (cleaned) yet. i thoroughly looked at it and liked it. they finised detailing it while we negotiated the price at the office. he went back and forth to his sales manager several times until once again i was ready to leave because we couldnt get a bank to finance it at the price and interest rate i wanted. he finally came back with the price i wanted but higher interest than i wanted. i accepted. refinanced a few months later. in the end i got the car for the price i wanted and refinanced to a lower interest rate. it took about 5 hours to negotiate the whole deal. i was there until they closed that night. it seems that they can magickly give you what you are looking for when you are ready to leave empty handed. this was at a big name dealership
>>84299918use search to find nice low mileage examples of the 20 year old truck you want
>>84299918>Cash for clunkers destroyed the used car industry in AmericaCame here to say this. In terms of reliability and utility, the cars of today can't compete and are engineered to fail.>>84299590>310,317 milesEverything in that car is at the end of its service life. Only a mechanic with time, a decent set of tools, and a garage should be buying that car. The body and paint being in such good condition says nothing about how much longer it will run.

>>84299590>Buy BMW X3 2013 reg with 90miles on the clock for 7.5K>It has some coolant leak a few days ago>Mechanics take 3 days to fix it>As part of the MOT they say "yeah all 4 tyres need changing" (they always say this).Fucking 800quid that cost me but whatever, should have just got it fixed and told them not to bother with the tyres, that was nearly half the price. I miss my incredibly unreliable but much faster manual Audi A3 convertible.

>>84299613Not really true, but the car in question needs to have seen regular service intervals and the previous owners should have actually cared a little for the car. And when you buy one you need to get a handle on the most important could-be problems with that car model/year. For example I have a 16 year old Audi A3, which is one of the simpler Audi models, it's basically a souped-up VW Golf with some extra electronics, improved interior and slightly sportier and refined feel. The main pitfalls on my car is, in descending importance: timing chain, water pump, turbo issues and the dual clutch gearbox. All of these are monitorable, and all but the water pump are affected by steady service intervals (oil changes primarily). My point is you can't be an average ameritard who neglects their car if you buy a used European vehicle, you have to give a damn, you have to listen for certain sounds, look for certain exhaust characteristics and keep track of oil consumption and fuel consumption. Audi A3 is cheaper to buy parts for, cheaper to maintain and is less prone to random malfucntions than the larger Audi A4.
>>84299590The most important thing to remember is that there's never a reason to get something that's not a Honda Civic.

>>84299590yeah, never ever buy from "dealerships" there are agencies who sell their used car but they been inspected to decrease sues, also look for garage cars and old folks, usually old dudes or women have their cars intact and they just sell it because they cant drive anymore, they are the most honest, avoid niggers, mexicans, indians and asian young folks.

Just because of how douchy your post was and how much I hate your fake degree im gonna tell you this, I make 50$ an hr straight time and I didnt go to college and dont have a degree. Eat shit and dont get another Acura again please and thanks.
Literally just look up your nearest Mitsubishi dealership, get your ass down there, and tell them you want a Mirage. Nothing else, a Mirage. Since they're discontinued but nobody buys Mitsus, they're sitting on lots being sold brand new for sub-$12k.
>>84301117>mirageMan thats the gayest car ive ever seen.
>>84301154If your choices are to buy some 300k+ mile, 15+ year old shitbox for almost $4k, and buying a brand new shitbox where that 4k represents more than a third of the price, the choice should be obvious. The maintenance costs alone on such an old car would equal if not outweigh the payments on the financed $8k.The Mirage hatch is faggy looking, even after the facelift but the Mirage G4 sedan is less-so.But again, if you really need a car, just a car to take you from A to B, it's the best option short of getting very lucky finding some low mileage, well kept japcrap for under $5k.
>>84299590The cheap category is also the highest risk unfortunately. You get a car with a lot of miles, a lot of owners, likely with a rough history. My only advice is to pay cash, that way you're only out money you already had if it goes to total poop. If you're on a payment plan, you end up paying monthly for a car you can't drive, which prevents you from getting something better.
>>84300372you clearly live in a low-income area, though. You are a nigger.
