There are a few blocks that are a little sketchy, not like super dangerous, but there are some low-income housing/halfway houses in the area. Also a decent amount of homeless around. IDK, just pay attention to your surroundings and you'll be fine. There is a lot of good Vietnamese food in that neighborhood if you're a fan of that.

I make less since I moved. Crime is overrated in Chicago -- typical city crime rates outside of the black areas.

Chicago is a pretty progressive city, and Uptown in particular is right in between Boystown(they call it Northalsted now) and Andersonville, which are both big LGBT neighborhoods. I can't offer too much on that because I am not part of that scene, but you will definitely find that people are accepting.
