Does that explain why you haven't touched the western canon? You could read a good book a week for life and never touch the 21st century books and still never run out of good book.

I still read though

Because in public education, they're forced to read the most god-awful boring shit available instead of trying to hook children to read and find a niche they enjoy. That's also paired with the rabbit hole that public education favors women/girls/female learning styles over men. (A whole ass rabbit hole about feminizing men so they don't commit crimes way back in the 60s and 70s and is now the norm.)
And that (hobby/pleasure) reading is no longer the main form of distilled information or entertainment. Fucking Twitch, Tik-Tok and Youtube reaction videos are what is here. Along with longer form discussions.

95%+ times books are long winded rant style non-focused writing that only women can enjoy or people who have it as special interest hobby

download zotero and hit google scholar and scihub if you are actually interested in something worth looking into

I can never finish a book but I've read thousands of research paper start to finish, fully annotated. I don't identify as someone who "reads" since I don't enjoy reading, I hate it actually, my use of reading is instrumental

"Men" only read shit like stoicism, Nietzsche, and maybe Mein Kampf, because it strokes their ego to read books with big words which tell them that they are super duper cool and stuff.
It's masturbation of the ego for the self. It's predicated upon the cultural notions of these books/ideologies which are all associated with "alpha" or "strong" characteristics. Hitler, they read for the edgy factor and because it's the culmination of the stereotype.

I don't read because I struggle to concentrate and I am not consistent with finishing books.

There is something true about this, in that smart people aren't the ones who read, but the ones who gake action, mainly in writing. To know how to write, however, you must read a lot. And Tate is a baboon who has never written anything.

Western Canon is overrated, too much literature and history that are only of value so you can go 'I got the reference yay I'm cultured'.
The dying and lost arts are better. Once you feel comfortable with the broad surface level stuff you dig through the older stuff, oldest you can find ideally. This teaches you how they used to do things. If it's obviously inferior to how things are done now then it's just a fun fact, but quite often you'll see things we're changed for dumb reasons and results are worse. Agriculture is full of these oddities, and there was a political push to purge and erase the old ways because of the immense money behind the green revolution. What started as asking how can food be better turned into how can we use PNK and various -cides to turn farming away from tending the soil for quality harvests to a strip mining operation. Vision completely turn on its head, inverted. The people behind the green revolution were very evil, a death cult. They claimed bigger, faster, more shippable, prettier fruit, vegetables, and meats. They twisted food into a product instead of what it had always been prior to that, nourishment.
>>
>>84375623

>>
>>84376890
who gives a fuck man, i think people that are trying to sound Intelligent and Well-Read read or say they read Dostoyevsky. but who cares? is it good? i very much enjoy the Slavic and particularly Russian...mindset, cultural milieu, vibe. suffering is interesting to me. and even somewhat enjoyable, in some senses.

so is it good? would you recommend? what would you recommend?

i am reading The Fading Light by John Gartner, a memoir from an Aussie that served in the Rhodesian SAS and Selous Scouts. interesting, sometimes funny. Four Ball, One Tracer: Commanding Executive Outcomes in Angola and Sierra Leone was my last read. much more interesting as it covered the logistics aspect and was more of a book than a memoir.

last fiction i read was the Call to Arms trilogy by Alan Foster; a sorta Humanity Fuck Yeah sci-fi deal. ayylmaos find earth, send down their dudes, and are like holy shit this normal-ass guy can break our limbs just trying to push us wtf. hijinks ensure. very neat! dragged on a little too long then tied up too quickly, as is common with fiction series. but great, highly enjoyed!

lets talk about books, instead of calling one another faggots! what is your very Favorite Book?

>i think people that are trying to sound Intelligent and Well-Read read or say they read Dostoyevsky
So you're also influenced by the cliche...

>but who cares? is it good?
Yes, but maybe my standards are low because I enjoy almost everything I read. I've read 18 books so far in 2026 and none of them were distasteful, so maybe something's wrong with me.

>White Nights
A very good story for people on 4chan to read. The hero is a coward who has no connection to others, but a friendly coward who doesn't blame them for his own cowardice. I love him because the reader is inside his head, and I would probably hate him from outside his head. The two major film adaptations, Robert Bresson's Four Nights of a Dreamer and Luchino Visconti's Notti Bianche, wisely changed the characters and plot. The latter changes his sin to covetousness, and he lies as part of his pursuit of love. Good short story, good movies, not good adaptations.

>Notes from the Underground
Everybody already knows it, I don't need to say a thing. I just think it's interesting that when Constance Garnett translated "White Nights and Other Stories" in 1918, "White Nights" was the A-story and "Notes from the Underground" was the B-Story. How the times have changed, how the former is forgotten and the latter is immortal...

>A Faint Heart
A young man fears that his job is in danger, and the stress causes him to permanently lose his grip on reality. I wonder if this will be a recurring theme.

>A Christmas Tree and a Wedding
A very good story about a bystander witnessing a scoundrel achieve his goals at the expense of others.

>Polzunkov
A decent story about a buffoon receiving his comeuppance.

>A Little Hero
A very good story about a small child crushing on an young woman and trying to understand his feelings while navigating the world of adults.

>Mr Prohartchin
An old man fears that his job is in danger, and the stress causes him to permanently lose his grip on reality. Oops, there we go again.
>>
>>84377055
thank you very much for the short descriptions and recommendations! i think White Nights would be appealing. i will start there.

sadly, i only really read at work, and i am not in a position where i used to read 2 books a week at work. now i'm lucky if i get 1 every 4. a shame. i got accustomed to only reading while getting paid hourly across a couple jobs, and now i am Working more at Work. a shame, but one needs more money.

may i please recommend American Tabloid and its sequels as some of the most evocative, raw, staccato very American writing ever?

outdated. life, world, tech, circumstance are different. therefore useless.

Reading is good stuff. But at least this anon's advice is not to fall for the hype that all of the Western canon books are good just because people say they are. For example, you might really enjoy The Odyssey but have absolutely zero interest in Moby Dick.
Fuck Moby Dick. I bailed on that shit, and will never attempt to read it again. And it's a great way to check on whether people actually enjoy literature or just go along with it. Does that tryhard actually care to learn about 19th century whaling techniques or are they just pretending? Don't pretend. Just read what you enjoy or informs your interests.

>>84380785
That's scientifically proven.
FPS games provide statistically viable increase in vision based abilities (decrease of reaction times to complex visual stimuli, increased sensitivity to motion and contrast), also statically proven decrease of Alzheimer decease (no so called "brain trainer" games achieve such btw). FPS is super stimulus that hit brain so hard it actually leaves traces.

Strategy, tactics or puzzles can be fun but from utilitarian point of view they are just mental masturbation.

Playing FPS on TV (to not fuck up vision with myopic strain) for several hours per month Is actually good for you.
Too bad modern " SBMM" are absolute cancer regarding psychic health.

I know plenty of men who actually read actual books. Like physical books, not just ebooks. There's studies showing how much reading physical copies actually stimulates the brain not just because of reading, but actually physically turning the pages and taking in the paper smell (even if it is moldy.) It doesn't matter what kind either, even if you read shitty smut like a book about milking Minotaurs for big pharma, werewolves being selected as sperm donors, or a mothman spying on a human girl having a fun time by herself after a night at a bar.
