It all depends on what you want really. America has whatever you want. If you want maternity leave just mention that in negotiations. For example say you want $50/hr and they agree, you can do that. But then you say I changed my mind I also want maternity leave. Some dork with a calculator runs the cost of maternity leave and they then offer $44/hr + maternity leave. This sounds overcomplicated to someone from Europe or South America where jobs are randomly assigned and compensation is determined by rigid payscales the government sets based on title and experience, but it's really nice in some ways. I will never give birth so maternity leave is of no use, I'd rather get paid more.It's easier on both employers and employees actually. I had to sign a bunch of stuff but basically said I want no benefits and maximum hourly rate the company can give. Doing the math I actually take home more than the hourly value of benefits, so vacation and all that is actually a huge scam. When I want to take a vacation I just tell them and I'm taken off the schedule. No paperwork involved because I get paid vacation every minute I'm on the clock reflected in the higher base rate. In reality "paid vacation time" is just the company subsidizing idiots who are so stupid they live paycheck to paycheck. They don't do it out of the goodness of their heart either. Transportation workers are exempt from the legal requirements to be paid overtime. I get paid mileage and only make money when everything is perfect and the truck is moving. My employer will deduct expenses from my paycheck if there are issues. If I were to take a day off due to sickness I will be immediately fired or at the very least dispatch will retaliate by giving me shitty loads with short miles where I barely make any money.
