What do you think is happening on exoplanet K2-18b right this moment?
>>84389758Glorb is calling Glarb a faggot on the holonet
>>84389758No pain. No suffering
>>84389766Glarb is kind of a faggot tho.>>84389780Likewise, no mud, no lotus.
>>84389758other than these neat graphics what tangible proof do we have this actually exists?
>>84389828Telescopes, probes, and such.
>>84389872could you elaborate or provide examplesit seems far fetched desu
>>84389758they are baking bread
>>84389886Pretty much the entire field of Astrophysics, in which I did not major.
>>84389886this kind of trolling is super popular on instagram too
>>84389758>>84389872>>84389938I could absolutely get into astronomy as an autistic obsession This shit is so damn cool
>>84389963Same, which is part of why I fell in love with Sailor Moon from Day 1. If not Astronomy, it'd definitely be Geology.
>>84389886When scientists look at a star and they see a dot cross in front of the star at regular intervals, that dot is considered a planet of that star. They can classify how big it is by comparing the size of the dot to the size if the star it orbits. They can get the speed it orbits at by how fast it take to reappear in front of the star. Scientists have been doing this since telescopes were invented hundreds of years ago.
>>84389951im not trolling and legit asking, whats wrong with that?>>84389977they can tell what a 'super void' is by dots a groillion miles/km away? and at what point does it go from pure evidence to theoreticals?
>>84389938>S5 0014+81>would hit the earth with as much radiation as the sun did if it were 280 light years away from us>will exist for 10^99 yearsstuff like this gives me anxiety desu
>>84389886You can literally see galaxies with your naked eye in a clear night sky and with some luck.
>>84390000>quadsIt's great, isn't it? Despite how massive space is, things can and will still reach us. Things beyond our immediate understanding.
>>84389996Their satellites have really sensitive cameras that can pick up really dim electromagnetic radiation. So they can "see" things that are really far away because of the light they emit. Light from objects that are far away tends to be at a longer wavelength because it's traveled a further distance. A big concentration of long wavelength light like radio waves or microwaves might be a galaxy very far away, while an object that is closer would emit a fuller spectrum of EM radiation including gamma rays and x rays. Once you've photographed enough of space, you can get a good idea of where objects are in space by how bright they are, what kind of radiation they emit, and how they move around the other objects that they're near. From there you can make a map of space. Places with a lot of stars would be clusters and places with very few stars would be voids. Super voids would just be very big areas with very few stars.>and at what point does it go from pure evidence to theoreticals? An example of theoretical astrophysics would be dark matter and dark energy. The masses and movements of galaxies don't match what our current physics is capable of explaining. Scientists came up with some bullshit to fill in the blanks. Dark matter doesn't interact with light and we have no way to prove it exists but it conveniently accounts for the extra mass needed to make the calculations work.Another branch of astrophysics is purely speculative. Looking for exoplanets falls into this category. We have no way of knowing what suitable conditions for life on other planets are. We can't even come up with a definition of life in the first place that would accommodate all of the crazy ideas people have about what aliens could be. We have no idea what we're even looking for and we're just throwing shit at the wall. All the planets we've identified that "could have life" are too far away for us to ever explore enough to know anyway.
>>84389766its kind of hilarious to think about an alien civilization having the same quirks that we do. imagine an alien jerking off to tranny porn
>>84390267What's funny is intelligent carbon based life likely evolves in similar ways. 1. A need for sophisticated communication in the form of language2. A need for multiple body parts to grapple things good3. A need for eyes to see things4. A need for interpersonal relationships and communication If there is intelligent life like us somewhere out there, billions of light years away, it's very likely they would creepily similar.
>>84389758>exoplanet K2-18b right this moment?what's that
>>84389758Probably getting a red dwarf radiation bath special.

>>84390369Well, that's certainly happening in the Nether.
