Built in gatekeeping. It's African tier in terms of actual sounds, only one language in the world has fewer than Japanese. They also write some words in roman script, so it's actually four writing systems they use. Any less and the language would be too easy.

I love it because it filters normies and is the reason Japan has managed to stay relatively homogeneous and culturally untouched in the age of globalismthe funny part is that the three scripts isn't even difficult at all and kanji is actually one of the easier aspects of learning Japanese, but 99% of Japanse learners never make it far enough to get to the actually difficult part of the learning curve (onomatopoeia, dialects, sayings/phrases etc)specifically onomatopoeia is legitimately the hardest part of the entire language for me because there's no context for their meaning like you have with kanji, it's literally just hundreds of different baby babble tier sounds that mean really specific things and are used in everyday conversation, insanity
