He could've spent that time with his family who it seems still care about him. It's his choice to work on his birthday. As for the nights spent alone, he has multiple failed relationships. Those are partially his own fault. He could easily have kept any of his previous wives around if he didn't want to spend his nights alone. Sure the relationship with his wife would be superficial but he'll have a family and kids, which is what most people his age come home to.
