Idun makes the Golden apples that keep all the Aesir (the main Norse pantheon) young. Naturally, with her gone, the Aesir start to age and weaken, and they immediately know Loki's behind her disappearance (he's done shit like this before. Almost got Freyja, the sun, and the moon sold to a different giant in a cocky wager).They force him to go get her back, and in the process of Idun's rescue, he gets the giant killed. This pisses off the giant's daughter Skadi, who's basically the Norse Goddess of bowhunting, skiing, winter, and mountains. She storms into Asgard for retribution, the Aesir instead negotiate to recompense her. One of the agreed compensations is that Aesir have to complete the impossible task of making her smile again, which they make Loki do. How does Loki achieve this? Tying one end of a rope to his balls, the other to the horns of a goat, and performing a tug of war in front of her until his screams eventually get to laugh hysterically.The idea of a woman going from miservale to full of joy as the result of witnessing CBT left a big impression on me.
