Because the church and organized religion are nothing but gatekeepers to the divine. They prey on our natural inclination to seek what is good and holy to control us. But the truth is that God is within us all. You don't need a priest or clergy to have a connection to heaven. You don't need to worship or obey anyone, and doing so will not preserve your soul. In fact it is the exact opposite of what god wants. You're not a slave. You need to actually embody goodness and godliness, make positive moral choices and take action to benefit other people and the world. That's literally what Jesus was teaching, and they killed him for it.
