It's not that they stopped existing, they exist in any population of people. Modern life funnels these people (self-serving psychopaths) into politics or CEO roles. Basically the context of wider society defines what you can do as one of these sorts of people. In the past it was become a messianic figure with a cult following, today it means becoming a politican or business leader. The result is the same: leveraging your charisma and manipluation skills to facilitate other people exerting effort on your behalf for your own personal gain (money, sex, power).
