If Linux is free, secure, and efficient, why does most software get developed for Windows only? Why is Windows more popular?
>>
>>84528436
Its spyware
>>
Uironically literally the Jews or something
>>
>>84528436
Because it's been the industry standard for years.
Also why'd you ask this here instead of /g/?
>>
>>84528436
because linux is for trannies
>>
>>84528446
/g/ is full of freetards.
>>
>>84528436
Its easier to get on your system and more stuff works with it for right now
>>
>>84528436
Because most people don't feel like learning linux, it's an extra effort, and anyone who has used a computer before likely used a windows computer, so it's more familiar to them.
>>
>>84528460
As crazy as it sounds, /g/ is partially right. You should use linux because it is better.
>>
>>84528436
Because Visual Studio is (unfortunately) the best IDE. What are you going to use? Netbeans? Eclipse? GCC in your fucking terminal? Borland? Still got the floppies? You use Microsoft Visual Studio or you fucking get lost, and it runs on Microsoft Windows 11, only $1999.95, order TODAY! EXCEPT IN NEBRASKA
>>
>>84528436
I use both Linux (for gaming) and Windows 10 IoT LTSC (for almost everything else). This is mainly because most software developed for Linux is kinda shit. Video editing for example is very annoying on Linux.
>If Linux is free,
I have never in my life paid for Windows. The only people who pay for Windows are business owners and corporations. Everyone else pirates it.
>secure
No OS is truly secure. Linux has recently had 2 big vulnerabilities discovered. At least one of them has existed for many years. The biggest factor in a computer's security is the user. After 24yrs using/building/tweaking computers, I'd be alright even using Windows 7 these days. Having a firewall that blocks everything except what you explicitly allow for example goes a long way towards protecting yourself against the vast majority of malware.
>why does most software get developed for Windows only?
Money/corruption.
>Why is Windows more popular?
Money/corruption.
>>
>>84528436
Because Linux still doesn't have a clipboard working between apps
It's UI is also quite shit https://woltman.com/gnome-bad/

I've tried Qubes OS so I could use windows inside a cuckbox but I couldn't get gpu passthrough to work

can you extract with drag and drop files from a zip file to you desktop?
>>
>>84528436
>why does most software get developed for Windows only
HUGE API that guarantees at least 30 years old backward compatibility that linux can't even do with software from a year ago.

on the developer / industry end:
because of proprietary libraries and drivers making it that much easier to develop and subsequently monetize your robust software products. why/how would you run a software company if you couldn't monetize the intellectual property?

on the consumer end:
the intuitive "point and click" gui that pretty much every program on windows uses makes it so installing software is an automated breeze. how many people have you come across that still struggle with some pretty simple tasks like correctly installing a mod for a game despite there being a visual representation for all your files/folders? windows also comes with many protections against the end-user these days, such as the system32 deletion prompt, and recovery systems that have personally saved my ass from picrel. (for those curious, i managed to open a command prompt and run sfc /scannow, which automatically found and fixed the problem without loss of data)
>>
>>84528602
on kde you can, on gnome you gotta extract the entire zip archive
>>
>>84528436
linux allows you to type
ls -allah
which is a command that will reveal all hidden truth stored on your hdd in a human readable format.
linux is the os of God
>>
>>84528652
>on kde you can
But kde can't open a 7z file
What if I NEED to extract a 7z file with drag and drop on the desktop? Did the FreeSoftware autists ever thought about such human and normal way of functioning?
>>
No one wants to use Troonix, it's highly autistic requiring command line shit to do the simplest tasks and full of inexplicable glitches which vary arbitrarily depending on your hardware.
>>
>>84528669
>But kde can't open a 7z file
What are you on? Yes it can
>>
>>84528436
Because most computers com pre installed with windows, and so 99% of people use Windows as an operating system. Linux isn't actually hard, people are just lazy and can cope with shitty software if it isn't totally unusable
>>
>>84528436
Money.
Linux is better for the end user, but you don't get rich off Linux software. It's the same reason developers moved from functional websites to making you download predatory mobile apps. The price system doesn't work in tech for anyone but predatory middlemen and those seeking to become them.

>>
>>84528436
consumers use windows because windows cornered the market when it was easy to use and linux was basically impossible to use if you weren't really into computer science. windows sucks now and linux is much better but what the people know is windows.
>>
>>84528719
This kek. Troonix sucks dude
>>
>>84528436
Because most don't want to have to type console command to install stuff and read hours on the internet to figure what installers work with your OS and what kind of specific package, system settings and drivers work for your programs that you want. The plus side is however that you don't have windows, which is incentivized to make your machine slower to make you buy a new computer by thinking your present computer is too old. When you buy a computer, your windows license is in the price. Apple got caught years ago slowing down their devices to "make it last longer".
>>
>>84528928
They were also very quick to implement age verification on Loonix.
>>
>>84529013
Apple got caught making the battery drain faster on older devices to nudge people into buying new product
>>
>>84529018
Yup.
And here I am on my windows machine, not tied to any account nor age verification.

>Ad pops up on my Troonix os: This project is free! Support us!
Yup, and my windows machine got no ads either.
Damn, feels got to make the superior choice B-)
>>
>>84529034
Idk about that, but everything can be managed by code on a machine.
>>
>>84528436
Oh no nigga noooooo

I don't get it, how will Linux make my experience better?
Windows: start up, open Chrome, I do my work.
Linux: start up, open Chrome, I do my work.
If I wanted to change the color of the top bar I just install a theme, not a whole operating system.
>>
>Linux
Come one, anon. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!
>>
Tried it, and it sucked a lot.
>>
>>84528900
if that's a problem for you then you should probably stick with your toddler proof os.
>>
>>84529325
What would you call alpine then?
Also kys
>>
>>84529241
idk about you, but with 10 i started noticing how my pc was lagging more and more with each monthly update
now it still "works" but its like night and day

i hate that i had to buy fucking bloatware 11 for my new pc, because all CAD programs are windows or mac exclusive
only chinks have a linux one
>>
>>84529583
>Linux user seethe and get irritated at the slightest criticism
Who's the toddler actually?
When I use a computer it's to have things working, not to play Lego until I get something in a somewhat stable state for BASIC things.
You call it freedom; I call it unpaid IT labor, but maybe Linux is for people who like to RP as a jeet?
>>
>>84529712
Nta, but windows 11 doesn't fucking work either. At least with Linux Mint, when something goes wrong, I can go and find the fucking reason rather than pray that some other guy brought it up to microslop so I could at least hope my problem is the same as theirs because windows 11 is vibecoded bloated spyware with ads from top to bottom and nobody knows how the fuck it even starts up.

The only reason I'm not a Mac user at this point is that linux mint was free and I've gotten used to using it enough that I don't think there's a need to invest so much money into an apple and linux mint it's just objectively a better experience.

So, you should just use Mac and ditch microslop. The only thing I've ever been dissapointed about with apple products is that they stop supporting your perfectly good computer after like 7 years or something, and then you need to use linux anyway. I haven't had much experience with Chrome OS. Maybe it's good?
>>
>>84529773
>ads
Why do people keep coming with this shit? I don't get any ads at all! Like, none has ever popped on my taskbar or anything.

>nobody knows how the fuck it even starts up.
But, people DO know how this all work. In fact, Windows is pretty flexible.
Look at
https://www.youtube.com/@FlyTechVideos/videos
and
https://www.youtube.com/@Endermanch/videos
Windows can be torn apart and many things are quite well documented.
Heck, I'm sure nothing stops you from making your own uDWM.dll patch.
You can even debug the kernel if you want: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYq9rpwl9Dc

>So, you should just use Mac and ditch microslop
No, Mac is pretty shit, and at least with Windows I get the Win32 API that will work and almost all windows from all periods.
Have fun using Opengl on a Mac.
>>
>>84528907
If it does it's a feature added sometime after I had to install 7-zip.

Linux wasn't done for the consumer in mind, which means most people.

Convenience is a huge factor on why you decide to use something. Like buying that shitty microwave food instead of cooking properly
>>
>>84530181
thankfully, linux is neither microwaved, nor cooked properly.
It's more of a technological hodgepodge of bits, held together by collagen. Of course, each meat cut comes with it's own flavor of collagen.

I actually find most windows freeware software to be abandoned and/or proprietary and sketchy.

Genuinely over the years Linux software is actually getting much better quality.

NOOOO you cannot have your OS work out of the box!!!!!
You have to pick a side between X11 and Wayland (window compositor) and choose a desktop environment that come with its own GUI Toolkit NO themes only work for ONE toolkit at a time NO you will have to install both QT and GTK ANYWAY BECAUSE FUCK YOU!!!
>>
>>84528436
Back in the day, when intel first came along on the Altair system, everyone was using BASIC, which was written for other architectures. MITS (Altair manufacturer) needed a way to port BASIC to their new intel chips, BASIC was non negotiable back then, you absolutely needed it for consumer computers. Microdick came along and promised to write an interpreter for it.
That got their foot in the door and they pretty much grew along with intel and x86 architecture for a while. They used to pay manufacturers to install their software on computers and I think they still do. Give it a couple of years and now everyone thinks computer means a wangblows machine, pair that with normalfaggots being tech illiterate and you got yourself a new industry standard.

>why does most software get developed for Windows only?

It's because of the way graphical user interfaces work. When you start a project, you have to pick which software interface you want to use for the GUI. Once you make that decision, then you're locked into that platform. People choose Windows GUI because that's where most of the market is. Once you write the app for the Windows GUI system, it's hard to release it on Linux or MAC, because none of the GUI code can be reused -- and the GUI code has to be completely rewritten.

The main problem is that there's no popular native GUI platform that's supported by all systems (Windows, MAC, Linux, Android). The only GUI platform that's universal is web apps (HTML/CSS/JavaScript), but if you use that interface, then your app is locked into running inside a browser, which is inflexible.

Basically, there are two massive problems in software that haven't been solved for many decades, and they cripple the industry horribly:

(1) There's no popular cross-platform native GUI interface, and they have refused to create one for many decades; and,

(2) You have to rely on whatever old junk happens to be installed in the system libraries (a problem that's sometimes called "DLL hell"), and they have refused to fix that problem for many decades.

There are attempts to fix those problems, but those fixes are not yet widely adopted.
