That makes sense on paper but it seems like every American company for about a decade tried to use this strategy and it often didn't work, like in the case of the Gilette ad in question. (Yes I know the company is fine, especially the parent company, but this did hurt sales). In America, companies and culture promoters often push things that aren't immediately popular with the hope that they can imprint their ideals onto the society and then the populace will accept it and learn to love it. Sometimes it works.

Often it is just about getting attention or trying to cater to an audience, but the dynamic in practice is often much more complicated than that. There are also financial incentives to have designated pro-social practices, and there are ad agencies interfacing the company and the consumer which aren't necessarily neutral arbitrators.
