Back then being "American" meant you were all on the same team even if you had unique interests and ideosyncracies as an individual. Common cultural ties and a strong national heritage naturally encourage social behaviors and being "for your fellow man as he is for you". I have the real reason, liberals destroyed communities across America with the fair housing act. White people dispersed. Communities were destroyed.
