Any secret society with a vaguely religious or esoteric component becomes the subject of a branch of endless conspiracy theories. They are right that there are secret societies of an occult nature that rule the world. The Freemasons aren't one of those secret societies. Bringing up Freemasons when talking about 18th and 19th century figures is pointless because everyone was a Freemason then. The Freemasons was where people would go to drink, play chess, and shoot the shit with each other. The actual esoteric theories which the Freemasons originally stood for were of no interest to them.

The priesthood in those places was a secret society that chose who would be king and what he would do. It's just that there are countless numbers of them and the ones with actual power aren't visible.
