Hitting a child should always be the last resort. You should always try escalating but still non-physical punishments to correct behaviour until absolutely every option is tried. It's a bit of a meme, but I've found that positive reinforcement is genuinely the best way to get them to behave how you want and you can start basically from the moment they're aware of themselves.
