Spatial memory is the strongest aspect of memory (some interesting maze navigation tests on goldfish proved that they retain memories of paths for weeks and months). In the hippocampus, entorhinal grid cells encode a cognitive representation of the physical space you've inhabited. The neurons actually physically form a miniature model of the remembered place, real or constructed. You can imagine yourself walking any direction in it, forward or backward. Associations will come in the forms perceived by your senses: kinesthetic, tactile, auditory, visual, emotional, conceptual, olfactory (smell), gustatory (taste), and obv., spatial. Start building associations that serve to remind you of the thing you're trying to memorize and then place them along a location that reminds you of the category of the thing.
