I've had dreams of simulated suffocation and heart attack. This was during a time when I had lots of sleep paralyses.

In one dream two grillers suffocated me to death using their shirts and I felt the sensation of suffocation.
In another I felt an ever intensifying palpitation until I was completely aware of my heartbeat, I could hear the blood sloshing in my ear and I was paralyzed and couldn't move and then I suddenly snapped to waking up.

The one thing in common with both of these was an awkward "I don't want that" feeling - I could describe it as a feeling of defeat like you said. Otherwise it wasn't particularly scary or painful.
