NTA but it already feels like I'm shooting bricks at dicks, I understand the concept of construction and I can mimic it but steering away from references and freehanding anything makes it seem as if everything I "get" gets thrown out of a window
Suppose I'll just keep drawing till it clicks but it has taken the wind out my sails a bit

I don't think it's a cope to use references but it will absolutely be necessary to freehand something if there's just no good real-life analogue. And it takes quite a bit of practice to develop your spacial reasoning enough to free hand shit without a reference and most of it just comes down to knowing how to draw simple 3D forms in perspective to construct more complex objects.
