>>12758773in the late eighties transformers sales were dropping off, basic action figures were more poplular. in an attempt to get into the regular action figure game hasbro made "Pretenders". the idea was that a transformer could inhabit a biological shell that was tougher but couldn't transform. in practice you got an action figure that could open up and hold a transformer. the action figure articulation was severely limited because the entire body had to open up, so really only the arms moved. the transformer was generally small and very basic to fit inside the action figure. I don't believe they sold very well but are fondly remebered by some of the oldheads. hasbro have even reimagined some of the designs as proper transformers, often incorporating design elements from both modes of the original toys.
