>>12758773in the late eighties transformers sales were dropping off, basic action figures were more poplular. in an attempt to get into the regular action figure game hasbro made "Pretenders". the idea was that a transformer could inhabit a biological shell that was tougher but couldn't transform. in practice you got an action figure that could open up and hold a transformer. the action figure articulation was severely limited because the entire body had to open up, so really only the arms moved. the transformer was generally small and very basic to fit inside the action figure. I don't believe they sold very well but are fondly remebered by some of the oldheads. hasbro have even reimagined some of the designs as proper transformers, often incorporating design elements from both modes of the original toys.

>>12758921the little robot turns into a car, he fits inside of the guy. alternatively, the guy can transform into a jet for the robot to pilot. the guy, robot inside, can then go inside the giant plane like a nesting doll. the bigger plane has a turret for the robot if you wanna take hime out or another robot you have. this was one of the most complex ones. mist of them were like picrel.
