it is commonly asserted this is because people stayed indoors. however, the covid infection rate contradicts this, as people stayed indoors and caught covid. this is usually justified by asserting the reproduction rate of covid was significantly higher than influenza. this is now contradicted by modern data where both influenza and covid are tracked. the only conclusion to draw is that influenza infections were incorrectly flagged as covid infections. this is a testable hypothesis i just wrote, btw. influenza has an average infection number we can expect to see in those gap years. we can subtract this average from the covid data, and see whether this new covid data is smoother than the new covid data. i say this without having seen the data let alone analyzing it. would someone who is familiar with this data if it has been done, or someone who has the raw data and would like to do this simple calculation be willing to test my hypothesis per the scientific method on /sci/? can't hurt to check, right? surely the cdc wouldn't do anything shady in regards to public perception on vaccines regarding covid
