So I have been teaching myself mathematics. I am working my way through algebra one but I am playing with some applied math as well. From what I have come to understand, pure mathematicians look down upon applied math. Why is this? What is mathematics without application? I say that applied math is the way to go, what say you?

L'art pour l'art.

Because they are often just people who are not good enough to do pure math.
No one studies math to do simulations, study irrelevant PDEs, solve problems for billionaires, and other soulless stuff like that.

Because they spend years learning all kinds of useless shit that they can’t really apply in the real world or even prove useful to anyone outside their field.
So they end up satisfying their ego by clinging to the idea that working at a higher level of abstraction makes them more intelligent.
Instead of admitting that most people, don’t give a shit what they’re doing, they think of this isolation as a sign of superiority.
So that, they feel less dumb and more important, as if being disconnected from application is a sign of higher status.

The distinction between pure and applied math is just a made-up distinction. Ask yourself this: is calculus applied math? After all, it grew out of the study of projectiles and areas and volumes of shape. Yet, calculus has applications in number theory, a subject which is usually regarded as 'pure'.

math and physics are the same thing
if a 'pure mathematician' disagrees, it's cause he failed physics and that's his excuse
if a physicists disagrees, he sucked at math

>From what I have come to understand, pure mathematicians look down upon applied math
that's all you
mathematics and the sciences have an extremely mutually productive relationship

Incorrect. Purists do look down on applied math people.

Way to go for what?
If you plan on making money then yes.
Applied math can make you rich, while pure math is hobbo tier.
This is actually the filter for genius pure math-tards.
Humility.
They will refuse to "sell-out" and therefore remain hobbos, when they could have made bank.

On the other hand they are right for feeling superior, so probably the best thing you can do is master applied math to get a good-paying job and then study pure math in your free time.

This way you get the best of both worlds.

This post is just a fantasy of your creation with no relation to reality. Almost every sentence is wrong.

I mean it is the way to go for anything useful. Sure pure mathematics is great and all and prime numbers and number theory are cool but how is proving Goldbach's conjecture going to help build anything, for example?
Don't get me wrong I am going to be studying both, which is part of the reason I am studying from algebra to differential equations, so I can get into pure math. I just don't understand why some people look down upon the people who use math to solve problems outside of math.
