The modern conception of romance can be traced back to the cult of domesticity that developed amongst middle and upper-middle class Americans in the 19th century. It is a product of capitalism.

Courtship rituals are part of the overall mating strategy but had more to do with mate selection rather than the mating itself.

How wouldyou define the "modern conception of romance?" Sappho of Lesbos (circa. 6th century BC) wrote love poems that wouldn't look out of place for what some cringy faggot would write in high school.

I didn't claim that love was a modern invention- just romance. I think that the concept of modern romance is self-explanatory (social posting in a capitalist society, modern gender roles, the concept of romance as a new religion in neo-liberal progressive thought, etc.). I guess you could say that it's the very concept of love itself that is misappropriated by modernity.

>I think that the concept of modern romance is self-explanatory
What needs explaining is how it differs from romance in ancient times.

>social posting in a capitalist society
For your thesis to have any merit, this statement must make sense if you drop the "in a capitalist society" part. And I'm not sure it does.

>modern gender roles
Gender roles vary in time and space, albeit with consistent themes. If your statement is intended to be as innocuous as "modern romance is beholden to modern standards," then it's a truism and wasn't worth saying.

>the concept of romance as a new religion in neo-liberal progressive thought,
Nigger, what the fuck does this even mean?

A plain reading of your post appears to indicate the concept of "romance," as is typically understood, is a new one. I countered with an example of an anthology of poetry that mimics our modern understanding of romantic gesturing.

what is it exactly you find modern about romance you buffoon?
it's literally the most tired trope in all literature since the dawn of time
(along with the hero mythos, and most of the times the two are combined)
