It probably happened in gradual steps, without a clear dividing line between life and non life. But back in prebiotic days these processes were dispersed and not self contained. Lipospheres spontaneously formed and the membrane acted as a catalytic site for chemical reactions, the interior of the liposphere gained more complex molecules through these chemical reactions. Lipospheres exploded or divided like a bubble, allowing the exchange of molecules between other lipospheres. Is that life yet? From there it still takes billions of years to get something as complex as an amoeba so don't expect to find something like that in a simple lab experiment.
