Two of the better supported possibilities are birth order and hormonal changes in the mother (the more children a women has the more likely younger sons are to be gay, possibly due to intrauterine hormonal changes altering brain development) and early childhood trauma (homosexuals report that sort of thing happening to them at far higher rates than straight people), and both could be true.

Polyamory/open sex greatly increases your social sphere via immediate, high-impact interactions (pun intended). Evolution isn't about perfection, it's about what works, and it sometimes doesn't work.
