Literally who believed the opposite claim besides contrarian scientists or people old enough to get confused by outdated theories like "the dinosaurs just got too big and farted too much or something"? If the dinosaurs were the dominant land vertebrates for over 150 MILLION years and the mammals at the time of the asteroid impact were small shrewlike creatures why the fuck would anyone think "hmm oh yeah those dinosaurs were totally on their way out anyways."? I'm not trying to be overly reductive, but I've literally never met a layperson who thought the dinosaurs were becoming weaker and then were finished off by the impact. It seems like one of those occasional cases of scientists being too caught up in the academic meta and pushing "interesting" but probably wrong theories just to publish.

Chixulub "crater" is a fucking volcano.
The biggest proponent of the asteroid theory spent his life and used his power to destroy the careers of anyone who questioned his pet theory.
Until now it is just taken as gospel by a scientific community brow-beaten into compliance.

the dinosaurs might have been declining and the asteroid could have just finished them off in their declining state. This was a possibility, and apparently this is not what happened. This headline does make sense and it does give a better picture of how the dinosaurs were destroyed.
