Isn't there much more than algorithms to worry about?
>>16849233Knuth Lites and Knuth Likes?
>>16849233>Is TAOCP overratedNo, but compsci people are usually braindead people who can't get into math and TAOCP is very theoretical and academic. People nowadays vibe-code in Python and these books are the complete opposite of it: It requires you to use your brain Its probably the most complete work on the theoretical side of algorithms and its designs and underlying mathematics However there are some other valid books on algorithms you may want to take a look at

>>16849233Most "programming" work now consists of gluing together various APIs into various frameworks. Anything that's in those books has already been encapsulated into the various functions of the API and libraries you use. When the books came out, FOSS existed but it was fringe. People often created their own implementations of whatever they needed, once in a while supplemented by a purchased set of libraries usually standardized to the company. It was important to have a good reference on hand to assist with both developing your own functions and understanding the various complexities and metrics of the company's libraries. Computer Science is a worthless degree for 99% of programmers today. Unfortunately that last 1% who actually implements the functions everyone else uses have to wade through a sea of the mentally ill and of MBAbros that see them as being interchangeable with the 99% of API Glue Engineers that constitute the bulk of programmers.
>>16849233These books actually require considerable math skill. Not just silly math induction that retards complain about SICP. I really really doubt the average cs retards can handle TAOCP, unless they had math contest experience or just a natural aptitude. No, a discrete math course you barely passed isn’t enough.
>>16849233>TAO CPExcuse me? Nigga gets exiled to China and does what?
>>16849442Doesn't look all that difficult.
>>16849233No.No.
>>16849233You have to wait for later volumes.>Volume 6 – The Theory of context-free languages (Mathematical linguistics)>Volume 7 – Compiler techniques (Programming language translation)Knuth is 87 so not sure he's going to be able to get all seven volumes completed before he dies, especially since he keeps extending Volume 4 and is converting the MIX examples in exist volumes to MMIX.
>>>16849836Oh, he's 100% going to die before he completes it
>>16849836Brandon Sanderson will complete the series.
>the art of computer programming>it's shit that has already been solved in every standard library and that nobody even cares about for 99% of things software has to do
>>16850179>t. dumb codemonkey getting replaced by vibe coding indians
>>16849936>he's 100% going to die before he completes itNot if /sci/ designs the perfect anti-aging protocol to keep him going.

>>16850226>dumb codemonkey literally has no concept of algorithms beyond CS 101

>>16849836He wasted like a decade or more to make TeX because his autism can't stand ugly (but readable) math symbols.
>>16851273>When Knuth received the galley proofs of the new book on 30 March 1977, he found them inferior. Disappointed, Knuth set out to design his own typesetting system.>Knuth saw for the first time the output of a high-quality digital typesetting system, and became interested in digital typography. On 13 May 1977, he wrote a memo to himself describing the basic features of TeX. He planned to finish it on his sabbatical in 1978 (though ultimately the language's syntax was not frozen until 1989).Based.
>>16849964Brandon Sanderson is trash. How tf do people like this shit?I read Mistborn and it was such a drag.He is a completely talentless writer and his worldbuilding was trash too.
>>16851594>genius writer brad sandwichman will fix it!I took that to be the joke. Not only is he obviously not qualified for the job, he's also rubbish in his own area of expertise.
>>16851594>>16851628He’s a very popular author. And he successfully completed a series of an author who passed away. Isn’t it possible you guys are the neurodivergent weirdos?
Say I take a discrete math course, an intro to proofs course, then a C++ course, and then have Linear Algebra and DifEQ under my belt (and Calc 3)Am I mathematically mature and serious enough of a programmer to take on Knuth's nuts?
>>16851763Yes
>>16851763Nope. You can’t even handle more mathematical intro algo books like CLRS or Udi Manber’s.
>>16851738Was very disappointed when I looked up the name. I thought that anon was serious about Donald having an intellectual heir that could complete the series. I'm sure the guy is really good at churning out pop scifi slop but he's going to be of no help in the CS domain. >Isn’t it possible you guys are the neurodivergent weirdos? If you're not, then you're the weirdo here.
>>16851256>when you're getting paid per line
>>16852103IBM used to use lines of code as one of its performance metrics for employee reviews. Code of that era probably was as bloated as a whale washed up on the beach at noon in the middle of summer.

>>16852000Are you legitimately retarded?
>>16852844No. Please explain your post. This is a science board. We're all here to learn. If you have something of value to add, please do so.
>>16852783I honestly do not understand why they code like this. It's some weird way they get trained over in India by whatever sweatshop they learned in. I don't get it. It doesn't save money, it's not easier, and it doesn't do anything better.
>>16853246Brown.
>>16853353My schizo brain makes me want to believe it's some kind of conspiracy to undermine western tech. Like, they mass train all these jeets and send them over to our country cheap as beans, and we're so fucking stupid and greedy we gobble up their slop. Meanwhile, they hold back the actual talent for themselves.I mean, I'm sure everyone does the same thing in that regard, but it seems like India has it refined down to a system.
