Just finishing up calculus and getting into "serious" math now, and I gotta say, there's a whole lot of mathematics that is just some basic concept we all grasp in plain english being rigorously defined by some nerd using proofs so they can name a theorem after themselves and say it is now the "formal" definition of that concept. It's basically like niggas just staking out claims in a linguistic territory. Is this what's in store for me if I become a pureblooded house slytherin mathfag/schizo that don't even fuck with muggle engineering/science? Just spending all my days fucking with numbers because I'm autistic about people understanding what it is I'm trying to say?Like... fuck no bros, not like this... Should I change major? I'm a math major right now...
>>16852370Take a look at this if you want a panorama of what is in store for youhttps://venhance.github.io/napkin/Napkin.pdf
>>16852370Just do what Epstein did.
>>16852370real math has nothing to do with the computational problems youve done your whole life so far and everything to do with rigorously defined proofs, once I realized I hate that kind of work in my first real analysis class I nope'd the fuck out of math major. do physics or engineering if you just want to crunch numbers and solve puzzles.
>>16852370If you find an argument too literary, you are free to formalize it yourself.Your itch is scratched, the author gets a formalized version of their argument, and we get our IQ thread back.Win-Win-Win!
>>16852412thank you this has actually been a good read so far
>>16852370Why would a person who hates math...Major in math???
>>16852370>Just finishing up calculus>he mean's baby's first derivative not baby's first vector field
>that's a nice 5th degree polynomial you got there, champ!>it'd be a shame if I proved you cannot solve it>hehehe I am smart>no sweetie there is no physical application that ever profited anyone anything for learning Galois Theory>you'd make more money digging Peruvian math knots and Egyptian tablet fossils>does it get any easier with linear algebra vector spaces?>no!>topology?>no!>fields in physics?>no!>fields medals?>no!>abstract algebra classical theoretic fields?>eh somewhat>tally ho! Back to irrelevance I go!
If you're not stoked about Stoke's theorem you're NGMI
>>16852502Becuase modern education kind of railroads you into it if you tell your prep counsilor you want to do anything even remotely related to science. They strongly encourage you not to go into STEM fields now and to just major in math or something like that instead. Not going to lie, you're right and I feel like I was duped. I might just be a retard.
>>16852513Im doing Electrical Engineering with a Math Minor. I also am getting a welding certificate. I was railroaded out of welding. I won't get in until summer and I have to click battle my way in the first 5 minutes of midnight to get into my community college program. I already have a B*zness degree. A BS in bullshit if you will. I dated Indian ladies who were PhDs. None have any concern outside their pigeon hole paycheck box and hate academic subjects with 0 curiousity to discuss it for its own sake. Why even bother?I met so many pure math spergs and my visceral aversion to their metabolism to their nerd swagger to their physiognomy got me backpedaling out of a math major to math minor. Encloistered academics are the most monstrously apathetic bugmen alive. They do have applied math which is math-ish enough to wow any engineer while engineering is not math-y enough to have an academic skeleton key. Engineers are best off in industry but technicians are hired more than engineers. Academia sniffs its own farts and needs a Chatbot drill seargant to ask "what industry applies this? What readership values this?"
>>16852523Yeah you kinda summarized my feelings here. Like, I don't hate math, but I'm not schizophrenic so I don't obsess about it. I want to do stuff with it, apply it to something. I'll probably end up changing major and just minoring in math like you did. Not sure what my new major will be though. Maybe chemistry. Chemistry seems kinda cool and very practical to know a lot about. I told my counsilor I wanted to do something in Chemistry and they pushed me into pure math instead. I should've stood my ground.
>>16852536You know they'd rather deal with people who know what they want. I can't truly hate any of the very worst people I've ever met bc well my dad fucked my shit not them. I was trying to figure stuff out but fuck. A lot of people just go to college you know? They go, get a degree, and then either get a job at their dad's or just fuckin whatever you get an english degree and then go be well most likely fast food bc that's it but at least you'd be gm. So I think they're pushing you to just get a fuckin math degree you know. I like math but yeah what they say you go to college to find out who you want to be is true. You see that idk math majors are legit nerdy as fuck like total neckbeards but with math and you're like ehhhh nvm. They know they're nerds but they stuck with it bc they legit like math.
>>16852412Literal tranny and an eternal grad student. Mentally ill.
>>16852552Does it matter to the purpose of answering OP question? Would the book by Lara Alcock or the VSI by T. Gowers be a better suggestion?
>>16852552OP here, the book did actually help me realize very quickly what I had already begun to realize in my first post. I'm not really cut out to be a math schizo. Either I'm too retarded, or I just wanna do something more concrete with my life than working on a bunch of abstract logic.
Congratulations, you've reached a 17th century understanding of math! Now I ask, would someone with a 17th century understanding of medicine be a good doctor right now?
>>16852560Hello math schizo. I see I offended your autistic vanity with my simple honesty, I guess I wasn't humble enough in admitting I'm probably too retarded to ever learn wizard spells like you. Also, fuck you.
>>16852562You're not retarded. You're just jumping to conclusions early with no actual experience or basis. It's like saying you know everything about how some physics field works after watching a Veritasium video.I'm trying to wake you up to the fact that you're being arrogant and presumptous
>>16852564I think you're being arrogant and presumptuous right now. You're misrepresenting the spirit of what I said based on your emotional reaction to what I said. You're not trying to "wake me up" or do anything benevolent here, you're just trying to gaslight me into your way of looking at things because you think you're more mature and wiser than me. You're not, you just lack self awareness because you have so much confidence in your perspective.Again, go fuck yourself.
>>16852566Alright, have a nice life.
>>16852560>lets compare the usefulness of mathematicias with that of medical doctorsWould rather see a 21st century mathematician or a 17th century doctor in case of injury?
>>16852569That is not the point.Besides,>no boolean algebra -> no CPUs>no vector calculus -> no wifi>no harmonic analysis -> no broadband>no Turing or Church -> no programming languages>no finite fields -> data arrives 100% corrupted>no graph theory -> packets can't find the server>no modular arithmetic -> admins get hacked immediately>no relational algebra -> no "boards" and "threads" >no Shannon -> no digital images>no linear algebra -> no monitor display>nothing of the above and more -> no 4chanMaybe I should starting hating mathematics too for making me able to read such a dumb argument
>>16852584who the fuck in this thread said they hate math?good job exposing your bias you fucking moron
>>16852584You do know that 17th century math is too useful and still widely applied and that not everyone who takes math courses ends up getting phd. A 17th century doctor wouldnt be completely useless, but his science/knowledge corpus would be less important today than that of a 17th century mathematician because medicine really didn't get serious until the 19th century while the explosion of mathematical knowledge in the 17th dwarfs everything before.
>>16852559I literally just told you the writer is a literal tranny and an eternal grad student. And you still put any stock in that text? Are you retarded?
>>1685261417th century math is useful in the same sense that "knowing how to read" is useful for a lawyer. It is the absolute bare minimum requirement to enter the room, not the work itself.Do you really believe a MRI machine can be built with just Calculus 1?
holy dunning-kruger
>>16852370Ok, nigger, tell me what a scheme is in plain English so that everyone can not only understand but work with that concept.
>>16852727Do you want to gatekeep math or spread the good news about math, what is it? Because you sound undecided in this regard>don't you agree that 17th century theory is useless because it doesn't attain 20th century technology? You didn't intent to say this, because you already said the importance of "barely reading", but with your rethorical question at the en d of the post you are engaging in one of the most typical fallacies
>>16852636I hope you make sure not to use any software written by that group. What are some distros or apps/services you avoid because of the same issue?
