>In our early 30s, our brains enter adulthood as brain architecture stabilizes, leading to a “plateau in intelligence and personality,” according to the study.

Good thing I'm 34 so I can't passively brainwash myself with this doomer nonsense the way young lads like you do when they trust the science.

Intelligence mainly applies to men.
>>
>>16857097
Women peak at 11, after that is downhill for their brains.
>>
>>16857078
Seems nonsensical. NINE to 32, with no further divides between? And our brains are not stable from 32 to 66, people on the older end of that are already markedly slower and dumber than people in their prime.
>>
>>16857078
wow my first instinct is to reject this data as worthless because the people behind are clowns that know nothing at all
>when little kids play their brains are soft!!
>we put people in school for 20 years and at this time COINCIDENTALLY brains are their most dynamic!
>once people leave school and find their career they coincidentally happen to "plateau in intelligence and personality"! isn't this fascinating!!!
this is just the fucking neuroscience equivalent of fuckhead that noticed arrests were lower when crime was lower and concluded that less arrests would lead to lower crime

couls probably do a dozen these studies and they all say different fings because like method bullshit and lack of statostical powrr which must be inevitable in studies like this.

n looked but must be not a lot of people
just exaggeration. like

ofc your brain garn be changing all way through your life

like its so arbitrary to say that if your brain must be still becoming m9re efficient, this should be labelled as "adolescent"

horrific bullshit

it's probably true that there is a period where plasticity is higher than the rest of your life. how meaningful this actually is though? i doubt it amounts to much.

Neuroplasticity is seen as the key to learning but as the case often is with intellectuals the cause and effect are backwards

Considering that neuroscience has propagated the false notion for 50 years or so that the brain can't generate new neurons, I'm inclined to believe that modern-day neurology has no understanding of the brain beyond what any 1900 neuropathologist could have told you.

Threadly reminder: Psychology is pseudo science, psychometrics are like scientology metrics and require trained initiates in addition to the instrumentation to make valid measurements just like e-meters need to be read by a licensed auditor to "make sense".

Might get to regret this but - I'm part of the research group this comes from. Super fun seeing it explode this much, reaching even the depths of this cavity. Not going to pull Lexie down here, but if you have some questions about the work (or even neuroscience more broadly), I might be able to answer.

To preserve my sanity, I will respond only to people directly asking me, rather than some of the hot takes that I already see here.

My puzzle of interest is the human mind, and this is as rigorous as one gets in its study. I assume you don't realise the amount of math and physics (the only actual scientific disciplines, right?) that goes into this type of research.

>>16857450
Never watched/read it.

>>16857455
Both, but if I had to choose only one, ass.
>>
>>16858036
If it were so rigorously understood, it wouldn't still be a puzzle, though, you could actually have something to point to and machines could analyze it without needing people like you inserting your opinions to finalize the results.

>I assume you don't realise the amount of math and physics (the only actual scientific disciplines, right?) that goes into this type of research.
It's irrelevant how much math went into this. It's an argument no worse or better than stating that a lot of linguistics went into some elaborate sociological theory only for that theory to fail in reality.

The real problem I see is that these brain studies, which obviously appeal to the feebleminded via a mis-identification of the brain with oneself, will inevitably feed into the cultural trend to arbitrarily restrict rights to young adults based on notions that their brains haven't "finished developing".

selecting people for high school at 14 years old now seems pretty unfair... didn't another study show that IQ isn't stable until around 20?
>>
>>16857169
or more accurately, they stay mentally 11 years old until 66, then decline.

dunno if you're still doing this, but what's your life usually like as a neuroscientist? i'm an undergrad studying cognitive science right now, and i'm a bit anxious about my future. well, i get that's a pretty immature view right now since i'm pretty young and i haven't even started grad school, but i'm curious anyway

so i'm curious, what's your daily life actually like? i've obviously heard a lot from my own professors. guys that travel a lot, talk a lot, but i wanna know what your life is like. is it really just research for the rest of life? are you planning to be a professor too? what else do you do? any other cool studies you've done (other than this)? sorry if it's a bit much, but again, i'm a bit anxious about what life's going to be like once i'm done with my studies

oh, and nice work on the study!

Makes sense
That's why in ancient Athens you only got to vote after 30

They should change age of legal adulthood to 32

>>
>>16857077
All brain studies are worthless because non-reproductible.
>>
>>16859657
It makes sense, now that I'm 27 I find it baffling that 18 is the age of majority, it's insane, it should be much later, but it's not that we as a society care about anything other than "what's the economic impact of that?" so it's a pointless discussion, keep in mind I'm talking about legal majority, don't care about sex crap.
>>
>>16858039
Oh, it is far from being understood. It is the most complex system within the known universe, and understanding it is one of humanity's great frontiers.

Do point me to a scientific discipline that is at this point fully automated. Results are understood from the perspective of what is known, and the old and new are interfaced in the mind of the researcher. For now at least - I do see AI eventually taking on that role as well.

>>16858509
Can you distinguish pseudo and real science for me? My own separation would hinge on the methods that they use. When studying complex systems, whether these are human brains or societies, the search space is vast and even with the best methods there will be a lot of erroneous paths which have to be walked for a while before they are recognised as such. That doesn’t mean that the whole endeavour shouldn’t be undertaken though - it just means that people need to be aware of the limitations. When findings get blown out of proportion, it is mostly due to laymen making them to be more than they are, not the scientist claiming they have finally “solved” the brain.

>mis-identification of the brain with oneself
Can you elaborate upon this?

>>16859105
Not sure how that would be necessary. But, as a simple example - artificial neural networks? Yup, those stem right out of neuroscientific research.

Hey, I am not saying that all of us are doing theoretical mathematics for breakfast and engineering new methods for the rest of the day. But we do deal with more maths than most of the population (even the scientific population I would say).

What's your advice for a TBIlet (contused prefrontal, since 9th grade) in his late 20's, who's still emotionally attached to the idea of getting an engineering degree? What steps should I take to mitigate the effects? What kind of lifestyle/s should I embrace and avoid? Supposing I have half a decade left of the adolescent phase.

The same way Flat Earth models "stem right out of" astronomical observations.

>>
>>16857077
A lot of uncs itt feel uncomfortable about this, but it's not a bad thing. Only kids and adolescents have potential. By the time you're in your early 30s, you need to turn that potential into something tangible. You can't just infinitely farm potential and then turtle your way through the rest of your life. You can stop farming now and progress instead. You'll be fine.
