Personally I prefer the long scale because you have to memorize half as many prefixes.

Which ones did the ___ish ___s use on 9-11 to demolish WTC 1 and 2?
>>

>WTC 1 and 2
Or rather WTC 2 and 1.
Since they demolished WTC 2 first.

This 6.0*10^1 second cool down is rough. Anyway going to travel 2.00*10^2 miles back home. Should take me about 4.5*10^0 hours.

When it comes to lengths how come we stop at kilo? We never say megameter just a million meters or a thousand kilometers.
>The distance to the Sun is 150 gigameters
>The distance to Proxima Centauri is 400 petameters
We never hear this.

Left side:
>sextillion
>sexdecillion

Right side:
>sextillion
>sextilliard

So which side has better sex, scientifically speaking?
>>
>>16858228
Sexdecillion is also used in the long scale but it represents 10^96 which is a bigger number than sexdecillion in the short scale which is 10^51 so I think the long scale wins.

remember when making a million was big time? now it is just how the shittiest tiny house in the gheto costs, simply epic

Bro you're outdated.
Large numbers are now measured in Graham's and TREE(n). Better learn about graphs, Minor Theorem and such things.

Seriously half-assed that one, anon. Commit to the joke.

I stick to the short scale mostly for familiarity, but the long scale does have some logic to it.
But when I have to go for a really big number, I go for the Conway-Guy convention for names
or switch to magnitudes of the exponent in scientific notation (ex. 10^50 -- mag 50)

Scientific notation is kind of pointless when you're trying to demonstrate addition by reading numbers out loud during a public presentation.

The Long Scale is the naming system where Billion means a million millions, which does not make sense because billion is very commonly implemented in economics and physics as now, and Milliard is often used for a thousand millions. It is the standard in most of continental Europe today (dare I say, Fr*nch old academia). It was also the official system in the UK until 1974. Short scale is the standard dictionary terms, at least most of them are, and I prefer them as such.

>The long scale doesn't make sense because the financial sector uses the short scale
Man what a great argument.
Let's say you wanna be able to name numbers up to 10 to the power of 63. This is how many prefixes you'll have to memorize in each system and as you can see there are a lot fewer in the long scale.
Let's say you are able to name all prefixes in the left column then you would be able to name numbers up to 10 to the power of 123 in the long scale. It gives you a bigger range with less prefixes. If you wanted to reach the same range with the short scale you'd have to learn another 20 more prefixes.
