my sister and mom were very into it when i was young, so i joined them on a few rides just on some nearby trails. i never got too deep into it since i wasn't a big horse lover.
at first, they found a place that rented horses that would let them ride them using the owners' equipment. then, they offered to trade their time taking care of/feeding/cleaning the stalls of the owners' several horses in order to be able to right them. eventually, they actually bought a horse (eventually a total of 3), and would go on rides during the weekends. i'd say that was a nice progression that actually let them know if they wanted to take care of and purchase a horse. if you buy a horse and realize you don't want to deal with everything, it can be pretty tough to sell in any reasonable amount of time while obviously still needing vet work/shoeing/food/boarding.
unless you plan to do horseracing shows/barrels/shooting from their back for hunting/etc, riding a horse is pretty simple (provided the horse doesn't have an attitude). it's the setup/maintenance and expenses that will bust your balls.

Hello /med/, why is it that having an spo2 of 70% is an emergency but having an hgb of 8.1 doesn't even warrant a transfusion? In theory, according to the oxygen carrying capacity formula, they should both result in about 60% oxygen carrying capacity when compared to 100% spo2 at 15 g/dl hgb. Does it have something to do with board effect?

I will say that a lot of the prereq courses are bullshit and I've never used most of what I learned from undergrad in medicine. Especially physics and organic chem. It's for filtering people out and that's it. Nobody uses the "hard sciences" like you say. At most you'd need high school bio, chem, and biochem. Medicine *is* an undergrad degree. Europe makes fine docs with the 5-6 year MD. They have been for longer than the US and the AAMC have existed too.

Alright you smug nerd since my question evidently went over your head, and you didnt answer it, (and you pee sitting down), let me ask it in a different way: why will a low HGB not result in permanent ischemic damage where as low spo2 will?
>>
>>16877475
LMAO get ready for 3+ years of fuckery nerd. Getting ready for step 2 and throwing out applications is the easiest your training is going to be.
>>
>>16877486
Med school was harder than residency imo
>>
>>16877480
because chronic anemia allows gives your body adequate time to compensate by increasing 2-3bpg, decreasing red blood cell affinity for oxygen and allowing it to deliver more liberally to tissue, whereas acute hypoxemia represents compensatory failure where respiratory drive and cardiac output can no-longer adequately oxygenate tissues.

Also you're gay
>>
Is 248 on UWSA1 okay for 4.5 weeks out?
>>16877486
Step 2 is the scariest part so far, also I don't have a single letter writer so far so next few rotations I need to hustle and get some quick
Also away rotations fuck me

I'm just hoping for private practice so I'm not too worried about residency. Exams scare me way more than clinical work
>>
>>16877570
Yeah 248 with 5 weeks left is good. I was in a worse position and ended up with 262 .
>>
>>16877637
Whew, thanks for the words of relief. What order did you do your practice exams? I still have UWSA 2 + 3 and NBME 14, 15, 16 but will gladly buy more if needed. Did U world over clinicals with 55% first pass (used it for learning). Planning on resetting it soon
>>
Is race mixing a mental illness? If not Has it ever been? Let's make it one if it isn't too
>>
>>16877480
You will immediately die from hypoxemia, you will not immediately die from stable chronic anemia since your body can accommodate the lower oxygen carrying capacity with increased cardiac output and increased 2,3-dpg to shunt existing blood into tissues

Obviously this ain't ideal long term but you won't crump like with hypoxemia
>>
It's not hard it's arduous.
>>
welp I've signed up to do the GAMSAT now. GPA projection is 6.5 to 6.75, GAMSAT idk how I'll do on it but my honours in is psychology and rn I'm studying bio. should be good for the reasoning and essay section but science it's been a decade since I was in high school (Chem and physics).

I really want to be an endo though so I'm going to try my hardest and even if it means I have to go to Tassie to study rurally, I'm going to do it.
>>
>>16878343
If you say you're a gay then you'll get in no problem. Adcoms love that shit. Look at the breakdown % of the test and just study to max those parts.
>>
>>16878251
I'd rather do residency twice than undergrad over again. The gpa stress made me go insane sometimes.
>>
>>16878346
I don't think UTA's does interviews they just base it on GAMSAT and degree score
that said I am a lesbian so I'll try to think of a way to mention it I guess? I do actually want to work with minorities I'm not even kidding

also yeah bio is 40 percent and chem is 40 percent so they're my focuses. i actually did a physics refresher not too long ago actually

I've heard a lot of minorities saying that endos are horrible so I want to try and change that, and also I wanna be an endo but not deal with diabetes all the time

What's training at a remote hospital like? The school I want to go to has three streams where one is inner city (but at a hospital that's chronically understaffed) and then two rural hospitals, one being in a town of 20,000 people. I still can't believe you think doctors are smart enough to not "waste" their intelligence on a shithole like this
>>
>>16883373
Do people really think doctors bring textbooks into the shitter, or flip through a dictionary before going to bed?
>>
>>16883378
I bring the textbooks into the shitter when I am cramming 6 months worth of material in two weeks because I procrastinated most of the time playing a psp version of yakuza

in school i took indepth notes about historical points the professors would bring up. history of contact lenses, history of ophthalmic drugs, history of optometry and the slow expansion of scope of practice, etc. was always fun to learn about.

Sounds fun. Post something you have saved. What do you use for note keeping too?

i just use regular notepad in conjunction with the pdfs/ppts they give. i just make notes of which slide the information is from every once in awhile.

3 people independently developed glass scleral lenses in 1888: Eugene Kalt, August Muller, Adolph Eugen Fick. from 1888 to 1938 all sclerals were made of glass until they came out with pmma which was used for the cockpit canopies of planes. problem with pmma/glass is that they have basically 0 oxygen permeability, so the cornea gets starved for oxygen. scleral lenses then slowly died due to the introduction of corneal lenses in 1948 until around 2010 where they've made a big comeback in the treatment of various conditions causing irregular astigmatism (keratoconus chiefly), etc.

How do you emotionally endure repeatedly coming into contact with people during the worst days of their lives? Do you just internally compartmentalize that and try to seal that off?

I have a yellowing tooth and I was talking to my dad about it. The dentist said the tooth might be dead and may need a root canal in the future. My dad immediately tried to sell me on using a holistic or "natural" dentist. He then started criticizing how my dentist made the dead tooth assessment (she used some super cold agent, put it on a q-tip and then on my normal teeth which I immediately felt sensitive to, then put it on the yellow tooth which I didn't feel anything on) saying the cold agent just made me numb so I wasn't feeling any pain on that tooth.

I had a really painful dental situation as a kid and I'm paranoid and angry that this random tooth is supposedly dead (no known trauma, no cavities on it, just fuckin ded for no reason), and I yelled at my dad for his stupid naturopath trash and I feel bad about everything right now. The tooth, the pain it will eventually cause, the cost to fix it, potential further problems, my dad being so naive with the crap he reads online, and getting mad and yelling at him.

I went down the rabbit hole out of guilt. You guys ever feel anger and hatred at holistic medicine practicioners? Maybe some of you practice that stuff? I've wanted to tell my dad - the holistic stuff is always "easy". "easy" solutions to deep and complex and painful problems, that's why its so easy to believe and want it to be true.

Naturopaths built their temple on appeals to nature and denial of reality.

I heard this straight from the mouth of my PhD program's chair as well as several professors and some MD's I've discussed my wishes to go into medical school with. The PhD professors openly said the career switchers are the worst students they've taught in years in department meetings.
>>
>>16885625
I read the summary of her post. I absolutely do think that many dentists scam root canals when they aren't needed and I'm glad my dad was hinting towards that. But the dentist I saw didn't say "oh you need a root canal lets schedule one", she said "it seems like this tooth is dead" and I started panicking, asking about a root canal or extraction and she said "dead teeth typically get a root canal, we'll keep an eye on it, come back if there's any changes, we'll follow up in 6 months at your next cleaning".

I also already have two teeth that have had a root canal (with a permanent crown) due to an injury. So I think the right thing to do is to urge caution but not jump to the conclusion that the root canal is always the wrong call.
>>
>>16885635
And further evidence is that the last ~3 years of incoming PhD classes have been overwhelmingly str8 outta undergrad with the token non-trad student mixed in. My cohort was over 60% non-traditional and we had a reputation for dropping classes left and right.

i don't know how to live. i dont have feelings about anything so i dont have an ambition or necessity. i don't want to commit to anything in life because im terrified of retaliation and/or rejection because any way i act is going to be empty and insincere because i dont have feelings about anything. that also means i have to push everyone away because i don't want to disappoint or fail them because i don't really care about them or I. if im statistically going to take my own life eventually, then why put any effort into masking all of this

my reasoning abilities and emotional insight are clinically below average and i can't handle the most basic of instructions and jobs

sometimes i think about killing people

I'm 40 and I have enough money to survive on for 5-10 years living comfortably. How idiotic an idea would it be to go to med school. Inb4 you're too dumb I'm just wrapping a cognitively demanding tech career and was always a great memorizer

Y med
Y now

I dont really want you to answer ITT. You're going to have to answer these questions well and get into med school against people who have answers for these questions, have been groomed for med since at least freshman year of college, and didn't choose another field first.

>how stupid
No dumber than anyone else deciding to go into med. Go for it, or don't. Think long and hard about it, medicine is a hard, shitty, thankless, increasingly poorly compensated field.

Now go and stay go, premed.

If you have a social psych problem, then just fix your life. If you have a biologically based problem, go see a doc.
