How do I learn mathematics as a hobby? Any books or courses to recommend?I learned up to AP Calculus in high school but forgot everything.
>>16880694get a copy of Stewart Calculus, work through all the odd-numbered problems and check your answers against the back
>>16880694You can study elementary linear algebra at the same time as calculus and i think linear algebra is more attractive to hobbyists. Refer to the board sticky for a guide. If, eventually, you want to learn higher mathematics not meant for applications, i recommend (instead of Velleman or Hammack):>TextbooksJourney into Mathematics: An Introduction to Proofs - Joseph J. RotmanProof, Logic, and Conjecture: The Mathematician's Toolbox - Robert S. WolfBridge to Abstract Mathematics: Mathematical Proof and Structures - Ronald P. Morash Alice in Numberland: A Students’ Guide to the Enjoyment of Higher Mathematics - John Baylis, Rod Haggarty>Lecture NotesA Primer for Logic and Proof - Holly P. Hirst and Jeffry L. Hirsthttps://www.appstate.edu/~hirstjl/primer/hirst.pdfModicum Mathematicum: A Swath Through The Basic Language Of Abstract Math - Paolo Aluffihttps://math.hawaii.edu/~pavel/Aluffi_notes_321_Modicum.pdfProof, Sets, and Logic - M. Randall Holmeshttps://randall-holmes.github.io/proofsetslogic.pdfBasic Concepts of Mathematics - Elias Zakonhttps://www.trillia.com/zakon1.htmlBUT,
>>16880706I meant: but, if you struggle while reading an elementary linear algebra book like Anton, Grossman, Strang, etc. you will need to work on the basics with something like Khan Academy
>>16880694Go to https://annas-archive.org/Type in and download "axler linear algebra"Do itType in and download "abbott real analysis"Do itYou meet the prwrequisites for both of them if you studied highschool ap calculus
>>16880719Apart from terrorism and luddism, there aren't that many worthwhile endeavors for someone like Ted Kaczynski. This is like asking a librarian if burning books is a worthwhile endeavor.
ignore the haters, math has a lot of topics, find one you like, linear analysis, complex analysis, discrete, category, etc, some people just like some topics more than others, very few can master all of them
>>16880726>very fewMore like no one. Unless you mean very few can master all undergraduate subjects
>>16880694Take up knitting or some other pattern based algorithmic weaving hobby. It will make you better at maths.
>>16880694serious: basic mathematics by langmeme aka start with the gayreeks: euclid's elements
Fucking retard here. I got filtered by calculus in high school so hard I had to drop pre-calc and retake it. Every time I had to seriously study math for class I would get headaches and struggle to concentrate or work my way through simple problems. Unfortunately I am now trying to get a degree and advance my career and I want to understand this stuff in order to do that. Is there something like "calculus for gay retards" that will baby me through the concepts or do I just need to keep banging my head against the material until it sticks?
>>16880804calculus is a big topic, is it derivatives? is it trig identities? double integrals? vectors? right hand rule? ftc? or just everything, do you like diffyq? there other advanced math course that's not continuous you can learn to if you feel it will make you feel better, topology, number theory, etc, modern learning make calculus foundational but frankly it's not needed for most stem
>>16880804At this stage, Khan Academy's interactive practice (you can skip the videos) plus any physical textbook (Stewart, Larson, Thomats, etc., they are mostly the same even old editions) you can get on your hands if you get stuck or fail to understand what KA exercises ask you. But there are easier options, you can even begin reading a pop math book like Infinite Powers to get in the mood. Other notable notable options on the easier side are Silvanus P Thompson overview (it is an overview, not an actual textbook) or a soviet primer like Calculus by Lev Tarasov (it reads like a dialogue) between student and teacher)

>>16880787>calls one of the greatest works in mathematics a memeeven if that was supposed to be bait - shame on you. you dont say that.
Pro tip: get a whiteboard/blackboard and some nice markers/chalk. Mount it on your wall.Nothing comes even close to it for stimulating understanding and curiosity.
>>16880804Start with AOPS prealgebra -> AOPS intro to algebra -> AOPS intermediate algebra -> Hammack’s book of proof -> Paul Zeitz’s art and craft of problem solving. Then you’re ready for Spivak calculus.
>>16883827Are other aops books any good?
>>16880696I like Rogawski, but Stewart is what everyone else uses, so use that I guess
>>16880694>How do I...
>>16880706NTA but I would also recommend mathisfun.com if you want to brush up on remedial concepts
