>chess is a solved game

The statement "True or false? Magnus Carlsen cannot win against DeepMind's AlphaZero" is true in the context of a formal, unhandicapped match under standard time controls. Carlsen has not played a formal match against AlphaZero, and the consensus among experts is that human players cannot beat top chess engines in an even match.

Overview of Computer vs. Human Strength

Immense Rating Gap: Top modern chess engines like AlphaZero and Stockfish are estimated to have an Elo rating far exceeding 3200-3300 (some estimates approach 4000), while Magnus Carlsen's peak human rating is just above 2800. This rating difference suggests that an unhandicapped human would be fortunate to achieve even a single draw in a multi-game match.

Engine Dominance: In a 100-game match against Stockfish 8 (the leading conventional engine at the time), AlphaZero won 28 games and drew the remaining 72, without a single loss.

Carlsen's View: Carlsen has acknowledged the strength of chess engines, stating that playing against them is "depressing" and that their unique, aggressive style has influenced his own play. He has not participated in a formal match against AlphaZero.

While specific, informal games (often described in YouTube analyses) have been discussed, these are generally not formal matches and serve to illustrate the engine's overwhelming strength. Human players are considered to be completely outmatched by the tactical and strategic capabilities of top-tier AI.

chess is a game of memorization, not of intelligence
>>
>>16884002
Chess is about memorization and to a lesser extent psychological tactics. Some people consider this to be part of intelligence but I don't.

Proofs?

He's really not that bright.
You can see that on full display in his reaction to losing OTB to Hans at the absolute peak of his FIDE ELO.
A loss from which that rating has never recovered, and in fact is statistically impossible to recover from.
Very embarrassing, but not the end of the world.

Just uniquely gifted at chess, and since this is something his father was able to recognize when he was still very young that meant he had the resources and training available to him to excell beyond what is typical for professional chess players.
>>
>>16884008
You are retarded.

Checkers is effectively solved. The best line is known proven.
Chess is not.

And what's more, chess is easily translated into higher spatial dimensions in a way that other board games are not.
Meaning that even if there is some kind of unprecedented computing breakthrough and 8x8 chess is solved in a soft way, then 8x8x8 chess will still be there. And beyond that, the literal 4d chess pioneered by real people (U Michigan IIRC) will also exist.

>>16884086
You have never played chess, and try to make up the difference in skill with rote memorization of openings.

That's why you're terrible at it btw.
>>
>>16884002
So what? It's his life. Why do you feel entitled to the fruits of his intellectual labor?
>>
Carlsen isn't a genius polymath or anything.
He's no dummy either.

The real genius types you see playing at chess are those lile Max Euwe.
Kind of people who literally reshape the rules of the game.
>>
Ehhhh he made a lot of money playing chess, and I think he enjoys it, sounds pretty good to me. He could've become and academic and probably had a shitty time and eventually got a job in data science or risk analytics or some other boring shit. There's no guarantee his chess aptitude would also let him effortlessly rise to the top of academia.
>>
I don't like to play online chess because I fear that my opponent will just use an AI to cheat.
Also Magnus might be a "genius" in some sense, but I'm sure he could never do anything useful if he tried.
Being "smart" is one thing but making big contributions to math and science is another thing lol.

Ever seen him do anything or talk about anything that isn't chess? He's pretty dumb.

His main innovation in the game was going to the gym more so he had more stamina for long games.
>>
>>16884084

The legendary Paul Morphy famously remarked that while the ability to play chess is the sign of a gentleman, the ability to play it well is "the sign of a wasted life". He felt that the immense mental energy required to reach the top often comes at the expense of broader life achievements.

You can't really tell how intelligent someone is by how they speak just like you cant tell how good someone is at chess by how they speak. He's also Norwegian so English isnt his first language.

>IQ test has a time limit

no shit
>>
>>16884008
That's not what solved means you fucking moron. Otherwise all deterministic games are solved. We don't even know if it's theoretically a win for white, black due to zugzwang, or a draw.
>>
>>16884993
>You can't really tell how intelligent someone is by how they speak
You absolutely can tell how intelligent someone is based on how they speak about things outside their own expertise.
>>
>>16885063
you cant tell how a checkers game goes by the first move either???

>>
>>16884307
You are mad. Is this because you're good at chess and have no markets of intelligence?
>>
>>16884084
you dont know jack shit, let me start with my point thats actually intelligent idiot. Q learning is useless with a game of finality absolutism that is chess since theres a finite amount of moves in a single game with brute force being the best since stockfish does that on a low level unlike alpha zero

q learning has been used for numerous optimization purposes and it fucking sucks dick

anyway peace out girl scout nobody on this board is smart or a polymath
>>
>>16885682
if you really want to get deep youd need to combine them with aiding in the end game then finding ideal optimization of pieces that would be the idealistic move for end game defeating human nature ish shit anyway its USELESS when you have brute force. computation power isnt a limiting factor since we already know the best openings and mid game developing routes
>>
>>16884002
not really. MAYBE he could have been a medicore professor/academic that contributes nothing, or he could go down as a chess GOAT. I personally would have chosen chess too, than being a nobody in the academic/research world.

Chess is all about memorizing board states and then the correct moves. Chess is not a game that can be played by anyone other than the worst possible players. It's just a memorization exercise for all other groups of people. You won a chess game? Congratulations! Either you played as white or memorized more than your opponent!
>>
>>16884002
chess is maths. if he solves chess he would have solved an outstanding math problem
>>
>>16886657
>Chess is all about memorizing board states and then the correct moves.
Yes, but here's the thing.
Chess grandmaster are as bad as beginners at memorizing board states that don't appear in chess games. While they are better to an unreasonable degree at memorizing board states that do appear in chess games.

This suggests that what they're doing is not memorizing the board states at all, but that something different is happening.
It's language processing and language learning is not memorization at all.
>>
>>16886975

it's just memorization with compression. You compress the memory using the rules of chess.
>>

false analogy dumbass you can its called VIQ and logical ability measured by similarities on the WAIS-IV
