The Earth has been around for billions of years before there were humans around, and aliens should have been around for billions of years too. Ive considered relativistic spaceships, but due to the interstellar medium it is impossible for biological life to build relativistic spaceships because the closer your ship approaches c, even significant fractions of c, the drag of the interstellar medium will tear the ship to smithereens. Even to reach the nearest star system will take hundreds of years to reach and theres no way to sneak into a star system at relativistic speeds without massive energy signatures.
Given known physics limits it may be theoretically possible to build microsingularity powered ships but I still dont think you can hit significant fractions of c via any means without your ship being torn apart.

The Great Filter is one possible resolution of the Fermi paradox. It posits that in the development of life from the earliest stages of abiogenesis to reaching the highest levels of development on the Kardashev scale, there exists some particular barrier to development that makes detectable extraterrestrial life exceedingly rare.

I posit that the great filter is the very things that make us human, allowed us to survive, and evolve to where we are today. The first of these detrimental attributes is superstition.

Superstition is the irrational beliefs at odds with scientific knowledge of the world. The belief that coincidental events or objects are directly related. If it were a mathematical equation, it would be 2+rock=banana.

Superstition is the mother of conspiracy theory. Conspiracy theory is the belief that nefarious “others” are secretly in control causing something bad for reasons that make sense only to the person/persons that believe it. Those who believe in conspiracy cannot be dissuaded because they are certain that they hold knowledge that others do not have. These people are ”true believers”. True believers are people who continued to believe in a paranormal event or phenomenon/conspiracy even after it had been proven to have been staged, false, or debunked. Conspiracy and superstition are coping mechanisms when the believers need comfort or an explanation on why things happen. The human mind does not like to think/believe that bad evil or unexpected things just happen.

You cannot prove a true believer/conspiracy theorist wrong. They have to come to the conclusion they are wrong by themselves.

All throughout history every time something has happened and someone in authority, control, or even those who are educated have found a solution and tried to implement it superstitious/conspiracists come out of the wood work and fight tooth and nail against whatever it is. Some examples:

The actual list of conspiracies is beyond the scope of this article. Conspiracy and superstition engender mistrust and hate against things that are helpful and vital to our survival: medicine, and science are the 2 most common.

Superstition helped us survive because a key use for it is the ability to put different things together to help us predict an event. Example: when the leaves start turning colors, and animals start moving away, and the temperature gets colder=winter is coming. Time to either move with them or make sure we have a good stock of food. A bad example is some one touches a tree then later comes down with a sickness and dies=the tree is evil.

The next is our ability to communicate. Humans are atrociously bad at communications. We can’t even communicate with any other creature on this planet and we think that we could communicate with aliens. We can barely communicate with ourselves and our multiple languages only make things worse. Countless times I have tried to communicate my thoughts to others and they completely misunderstood what I was saying. Sometime I have no idea how they got what they did from what I said. Same goes the other way. I thought I clearly understood someone and did not.

Communication is key because without it we cannot coordinate activities, transmit knowledge and keep the peace.

Mental illness is anything that causes a person to act or react in a way that is not conducive to the survival of a species.
sexual deviancy can result in failure of a species.
Psychopathy lack of empathy results in dictators and wars.

Many mental disorders just do not exist in non-sentient creatures because they result in the species going extinct or the individual dying before it can pass on its damaged genes.

Selfishness is something that every creature on this planet has because those who are not looking out for themselves will not survive. There is no purely altruistic creature on earth, and if there ever was it died out very quickly. Yet in order for us to go to the stars we would have to cooperate, and sacrifice our personal goals and selfish wants or needs for the greater good. I just do not see that happening. There is always someone who will undue any attempt at universal cooperation purely out of their own greed and selfishness. Selfishness is the single major reason why we will not make it much further than our own solar system. We can barely stand to get along in dire emergencies and survival situations much less in the decades, or centuries it would take to get to another solar system.
This last one is the most difficult to process and understand. In order to make it to another solar system and eventually the stars we cannot save every person who is born. No one wants to be the genetic reject but until we control mutations and errors in our genetics, we will not be fit enough to make it out there. Interstellar space is inhospitable to life as we know it and we cannot make it to the stars in spaceships filled with those not completely up to the task.

TLDR:
The only way we can become a space faring race is to genetically engineer ourselves to be smart, fit, completely cooperative, and with no personal drive to be better than those around us. We would have to be like bees or ants with a desire to do anything and everything to do what is need for the whole species to survive. Star Trek has it correct. We need to be a pseudo militaristic society of socialists. So… that will never happen.
