There's something I can't wrap my head around and that is how can intelligence be selected for overall?Lets say you have 2 separate populations. One is a bit smarter than the other. There's no convincing reason why the smarter one should actually outbreed the dumber one. A dumber animal generally breeds more so there's no reason the dumber population shouldn't just overtake the smarter one eventually.

Selection does not operate on populations, it operates on individuals. A trait like intelligence is selected for not if more intelligent populations outbreed less intelligent populations, but rather if the more intelligent individuals inside a population outbreed the less intelligent individuals inside that same population..In social species including humans, the reason that intelligence is selected for is mostly that more intelligent group members are better at making use the resources the group has access to. The more intelligent wolf is more capable of making use of the pack for their own benefit, the more intelligent monkey is more able to get the banana that his less intelligent neighbor failed to reach, the more intelligent human is more able to successfully argue that HE should be in charge for the good of the tribe and deserves the best meat and fuck all the women.

Certainly there are different aspects of intelligence, and some of these are more relevant for within-group benefits than others; and so someone extremely intelligent but with most of their talents in the more abstract-mathematical parts of intelligence and not so much the interpersonal parts may still not be evolutionarily favored. Or to say it differently, the form of intelligence for which there is strong selection pressure is not exactly the same as the one measured by IQ; they are strongly correlated, yes, but not equal, and the tails do come apart (someone who is extreme at one is usually not extreme at the other).

The outliers often come about as a result of some kind of freak accident (such as idiot savants) and it's that which is crippling them, not the high IQ. Low IQ autist doesn't fare any better than a high IQ autist. Also IQ isn't actually intelligence and while the difference isn't that big of a deal for most purposes today it's more than academic for evolutionary reasons. Someone with a high IQ is by no means automatically intelligent if they are socially crippled they probably aren't.
